@Inphinity : Thanks. I prefer not being held ransom to the reseller.Been there and done that with World Exchange with my fibre as they had a monopoly in my area, was ridiculous and still is with rates

@KiwiNZ : File Server, Backup servers, redundancy is must as data is priceless, media server, web server, exchange server. Mobile App server will come later. Overkill is not a problem as it can accomodate our never ending growth.

IBM is offering some good deals for what you need, any of their partner resellers will be able put together a competitive package.

In the last 6 years of dealing with Dell servers (rack and blade) I've only had a problem with one, and that had a stick Kingston RAM in it which was DOA, so more a Q.C issue than a Dell issue.

I've heard many people speak highly of HP servers and it's true that their LOM was way ahead of the pack for a while, less so now.

In the end the difference will be slight and it's not like any have a propensity to fail. Save some $$ on the servers, and spend the extra $$ saved where it counts more.

We stick with HP because in our experience the after-sales support is usually superb. They have their own support people doing the repairs.

Dell & HP both get my vote. Have had really good experience with their feature and warranty support. With IBM, you are going to have to assemble the server yourself! They ship you 20 boxes!

Do whatever you want to do man.

No question in my mind. Supermicro period. The quality and failure rate is much lower than I've experienced with every other brand and they are so much cheaper you can literally have a spare of every part sitting next to it and its still much cheaper.

The IBM boxes don't ship with the HDD's installed and no server should, as for assembling hmmm yeah no. They do from drop box to turn key.

I used to buy HP and they are fine. The last few I bought Cisco rack servers and they were not only great value but perform really well.

I would hardly call Supermicro whitebox. They are probably the most used servers for hosting worldwide.

We run about 30 of them from SAN to hypervisors to high core (64 core) processing nodes and in all the years I've used them I've only ever had 2 failures with one being an onboard NIC about 5 years ago and another being a PSU which was faulty on arrival. Sure you can't blame Dell support etc. when it goes down but if you aren't in a job where its all about passing the buck and actually about running systems then they are the best.

100% agree with this. I've had clients ask me to provide whitebox type solutions like SuperMicro and servers by some local manufacturers. Most come around, the rest we walk away from. It's just not worth it.

I see Fujitsu taking a lot of stick here but I have to say our experience with their gear has certainly been positive.

They've been our principal server vendor for quite some time now and their late model RX300 line have been rock solid stable for us. The team in Christchurch have generally been good for support also.

Worth a look at least.
