billgates: He tripled revenues, doubled profits and added many more billion dollar a year products. Hardly what I would call going down a bad path.

Well I see most of what he did that was "good" was following the path already set for him, by the previous management team. I believe it wouldn't have largely mattered the first few years who was in power. The last few years he appears to have tried to do things "his" way and that hasn't been as good I don't think.

Path already set for him? You mean the path that was now set by anti trust shackles? Xbox, Sharepoint, Microsoft Dynamics, Lync, Windows Azure, Office 365 started under his leadership and went from $0 to billion + $ a year businesses.

Under his leadership the company's revenue and profit every year has gone up. Like someone said earlier, the pundits who keep making predictions, or the rebel investor's prob cannot even run a corner dairy.

Do whatever you want to do man.

That's a pretty one sided view in my opinion. MS have done a number of good things, but:

Zune, Vista (Not a bad OS but terribly handled by MS), Windows 8, Windows Phone, Windows RT, Failing to wake up to seach (Bing), Earlier versions of Windows Phone, and generally missing the importance of Mobility in the modern world until extremely late.

Re your Anti-trust comment, I am imagining based on your tone, you think it was all a big shake down and MS never acted in an Anti competitive way?

thats only consumer products (maybe not bing), microsoft is much larger than the average consumer. windows azure is amazing, and really is a huge plus to microsoft.

thats only consumer products (maybe not bing), microsoft is much larger than the average consumer. windows azure is amazing, and really is a huge plus to microsoft.

As I said, it's not that MS hasn't made ANY good products, or that Steve Ballmer hasn't done ANY good, though I personally believe most credible CEO's for this position could have done at least as good.

No, I am saying that Steve Ballmer became the CEO of a company that was now shackled by Anti Trust rulings. Not only in US but also Europe.

I do not see how Windows 8 is bad or terrible. The sales are good. Are Mac's bad because it's sales have been going down every quarter thanks to tablets? No.

Every company has failures under their belt and this includes the likes of Apple and Google. Steve Jobs was a failure in his first phase of running apple. Was he a terrible CEO overall? No.

You are only looking at profucts like Kin, Zune (great product btw), Vista, late entry of Windows Phone/Windows 8 tablets/phone that were introduced under his leadsership ofourse but as an overall CEO, when you look at the earnings report of Microsoft, under his leadsership the revenue and profits have only gone up.

btw as much as you want to laugh at Bing, it holds combined search marketshare (counting Yahoo's backend) of 30% in USA. I know US does not represents the entire world and in comparison to google, bing is no where as near as good in NZ, 30% share in market like US is very good.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Interesting comments here regarding Balmer and Elop's chances of replacing Balmer at Microsoft. He even suggests that Balmers retirement wasn't voluntary.
