everyone sounds like a nightmare to deal with :/

Orcon : no one seems to know who to speak to about co-location (worrying), call the number on their site and you get asked to leave a voicemail.....whaaaaaaaaaat!?

Zeon: I can say without a doubt avoid HD. When i used to run web-2u.co.nz, I got 3x customers who were switching colocation to us and in all 3 cases, parts of their servers were "missing" like power supplies, drive caddies etc.

Web-2u is pretty cheap, unlimited traffic and Auckland. Reliability is Good but not excellent.

I would also strongly recommend you stay away from Orcon. Their facilities are good and network reliable however they struggle to handle even a $3000 a month account so not sure of their abilities for 1u colocation. It will be difficult to get them to meet you at the DC if you ever need any work either.

I would also be wary of the "Data Centre" where Webslice, Voyager etc. are based. That place is in a basement in a flood zone (although once in a 30 years or something flood). Also no parking and might be redzoned in an Earthquake.

You could try Unleash as they subrent cage space from Compass just off Khyber Pass road.

No matter what any colocation is prone to disaster of some type. How you mitigate that risk is the most important factor.

Offsite backups are a must if you want to keep your data safe.

I'd recommend Unleash - they can tailor your needs into a package, have very good uptime (no downtime during the September / February earthquakes in their main Christchurch datacentre) and the staff are knowledgeable, their network also supports IPv6 and all that fun stuff and they have plenty (I mean plenty) of bandwidth.

As a bonus they peer at almost all internet exchanges in NZ so local users will see performance. If you also get a xDSL / Fibre plan with them then they'll offer free unlimited traffic to your server.

I have no experience with Unleash for Co-Lo, but I confirm we have about 10 happy customers with them and I have been a customer previously and was very happy.

Yea I would definitely agree, but if you analyze risks, what-ifs etc. I would say a datacentre in a non built up area, above sea level and on bed rock etc. is going to usually be a better choice. you also need to look at power grid connections, fibre routes to the building, etc. Sooo many variables but I'd rate things like being in a flood zone as something to easily mitigate.

The reality is that if there is a major earthquake or volcano in Auckland in the wrong place, NZ is going to lose internet?

I couldn't recommend Orcon, extremely bad service response, seemingly lack of escalation chain or responsibility taking.

Vocus/Maxnet and ICONZ are both good reliable options, may be on the more expensive side vs the budget providers.

It will depends how you weigh up cost vs quality.

If it was between Vocus and ICONZ for co-location, Vocus will win hands down.

I won't go into why - but having worked at both companies I know which one I would prefer to have my server in :)

Vocus I have heard good things about, but never used personally. MaxNet, last I used them was 4, maybe 5 years ago, and would stay away (hosting on your own dial-up would have been a better experience), though now that they're owned by Vocus, I suspect the issues may well have gone.
