A few hours ago I was viewing the exhibit at Puke Ariki Museum in New Plymouth. There was a 1981 newspaper photo of two TSB representatives at the first NZ ATM . One was John Holliins, the Data Processing Manager, who was still the IT Manager at least twenty years later.

I just wish NZ eftpos worked properly... I was at the Spruce Goose Wellington on Boxing Day and their eftpos wouldn't recognise ANY of my Aussie cards. Meant I had to starve the night away.

Edit: I don't know who their provider is but I tried ANZ visa, ANZ Mastercard and QANTAS cash card. Wasn't impressed since it was the closest place to an international airport.

New Zealand has one of the highest number of debit transactions at retail POS than i think all other countries except norway or sweeden or something like that.
The system was a local early design and much like other computing systems of the time, interconnection or future changes were not really factored into the product design.

I've had the same problem in Aussie with a NZ credit card. Some times there is a glitch in the matrix.

Is QANTAS cash card also an ANZ card? It sounds more like an ANZ Aus problem (assuming that the cards would normally work here).

This is why I always carry cards from at least two different banks when I travel, I know the bankers can't be trusted ;)
