Christmas is a reminder that another year is coming to a close. I can still recall the times when the collision of the stat holidays and weekends from Christmas day into the new year meant cash needed to be stacked in the wallet to last days on end (no eftpos or credit cards - just cash or cheques). Then ATMs came along - but when? My memory is that the first ATM network in NZ was the Anytime network circa 1982 (hosted by Challenge Computers). This was followed by a network (the name of which I cannot recall) hosted by Databank.

I have tried in vain to find historical records around the deployment of ATMs in NZ. Is there anyone on Geekzone as old as I am that can help out on when ATMs (and eftpos for that matter) were deployed in NZ?

I remember using a ATM when they first came out I was sure someone was sitting inside

Did New Zealand had those machines that used punch cards with pre-set amounts per card?

I have never seen a punch card ATM, but in the old days if you had $200 in your account, you could go to several ATMs and withdraw $200 at each and not go into overdraft, until they cleared the ATM the next day. That was a bonus before pay day.

Here: punch card ATM... Those were popular in Brazil in the early 80s until mag stripes came into play.

They had a specified value and clients would receive five a month, or something like this.

I can remember as a child, waiting beside my father when he used the national bank ATM in upper hutt.
It had an anti-vandal clear perspex screen.
When you inserted your card, the screen would rise up allowing you to touch the crt / pinpad.

This is a good thing.
Years ago I just to fix ATMs. Many a time you'd find it covered in some sort of unsavoury substance, taking the card reader and keypad out of service with it.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

I have found some other historical references to the formation of a pre-cursor network (1985) to the EFTPOS networks (now operated by Paymark and EFTPOS NZ) in 1989. Aside from the TSB Bank reference to ATM deployment in their history, I cannot find any definitive history on ATM deployment in NZ (the only reference to the Anytime network operated by Challenge Computers was in a LinkedIn profile). Its seems likely that my recollection of using an ATM on Christmas day 1982 in Glenfield, Auckland is correct. At that time retail shops (including Supermarkets) were limited by law on trading hours (Monday-Friday, 9-5 except for late nights on Thursday or Friday) - so no weekend shopping. Add to this no shopping on statutory holidays (dec 25-26, Jan 1-2, easter etc). Being able to withdraw cash from the bank on Christmas Day was amazing in the context of those days.

Its a reminder on how far we have come since then.

Not on Christmas day (as now) but there was laways the pub, the races, the beach, the movies etc.
