Oops that was the wrong thing to say. The behaviour shows there is a record for it, but it is wrong in effect. Maybe this is a side effect of something that is needed or maybe there are problems in the dns configuration. Can you paste a list of all your current dns settings?

Is this what you're after?

In conclusion OP: Get rid of the A record, foward the domain to the cname address, and live with the fact the subdomain of your provider shows up because thats a limitation (or flaw in my opinion) of the service they offer you!

Yep I think it is a bit of a flaw, I chose photoshelter after some for a couple of reasons, one being that I know a photographer doing a similar line of me that uses it and he said it works well, secondly the pricing was quite good. This is my first attempt at having my own website so I'm sure i'll learn a lot along the way.

Can you check his site and see what the behaviour is?

Also compare his dns settings.

Same behavior on his site, I will try to check his dns settings.

This is the response I received from photoshelter

"Essentially what happens is our system generates a link with the CNAME URL for your initially, so you can pass it along to your clients or post it on social media. However, once clicked, the link automatically reverts to your actionimagesnld.photoshelter.com address because the browser reads the link as going to a secure page. In this case this has nothing to do with whether or not your images were priced, it really has to do with the fact that you shared a pre-made link that won't register as going to a secure page until it is selected."

I sent that exact link to the d4l help people and these are the settings they made, can you tell me what I need to change, I'm obviously an amateur at this but I'll give it a go if there's no chance of me causing a major f-up

Change the last CNAME record VALUE on the list above to:

custom.photoshelter.com

I assume the d4l people looked up the ip address for the same domain and used that instead of the above. The change may or may not make any practical difference but that is what photoshelter specify.

Yeah I see nothing in the above pointing to photoshelter at all, so I think there will be a 'template' type thing somewhere else with your 'actual' settings in it. Names vary between dns providers so have an explore until you see something that might be relevant.

seriously the interface is so disjointed, it's like i'm traveling between 3 or 4 different businesses to find the settings I'm after
