askelon:

Google Suite & Office 365 are complete overkill for what these people will be using the mail for and the cost is too prohibitive to boot.

$7.60 per month per user prohibitively expensive ?  for 365
You can sell it buy explaining it works better than imap with outlook , & they can easily share calendars . And Out Of Office works (in Outlook)

I do know some clients wont even spend that, despite ongoing issues with current email providers :-(

Thats correct.  Personally Im more than happy with O365/Google Suite (which I personally use) but some people just dont want to spend much on mail.  They dont use calendars so the extras really arent needed for this particular group.  Ive set them up with MXroute now and that seems to be working fine.  And fits into their budget.

Why would someone pay US$5 / month (NZ$90/year) per user when all they need is basic email? Given I have a couple of VERY small businesses, a couple of other domains, it might cost me $500 per year for email. My small AWS server only costs me about $50 per year. MXRoute looks like they can do that for US$30 / NZ$40 per year if you can cope with limited storage (I can), sounds like a great deal.

I'm pretty happy with fastmail on the grandfathered plans, but the current plans are about the same as Google. If MXRoute is reliable and has the right features I'd consider moving.

I use a free account from zoho for my own domain

It gets 5gig of storage and in the 5 years i've had it have only used up 9% of it

I cant remember how many addresses it lets you setup for free but I have 2 email addresses with it both had 5 gb limits

If I ended up having to pay for it id happily do the $3 USD per month plan

because they then ask why Outlook Out of Office doesnt work.
Issues with imap & Outlook : it happens .
ongoing sync , password , reliability issues with some email hosting services

Im just saying you need to give them the option (ie 365).
