Im setting up a few email addresses for someone with their own domain. Previously they have been using their webhosts email system but its total rubbish and they have just switched hosts and the new ones twice as bad and three times as unreliable!

Previously Ive been using ZOHO on their free accounts and thats been ok. Now they have removed POP/IMAP for their free accounts its costing $12US/User a year. Thats fine and all except they want you to sign up using a mobile number - already used mine previously and so has my customer.

Google Suite & Office 365 are complete overkill for what these people will be using the mail for and the cost is too prohibitive to boot.

Anyone have any suggestions along the lines of ZOHO? $12US/Year per user is a more than acceptable price, just dont want to be spending too much more.

Currently they are all connected via IMAP. Dont really want to go back to POP.

G Suite Basic = USD $5 per month. - https://gsuite.google.com/pricing.html. Its really simple and easy and you bring your own domain. One of (if not the) best service available. Almost all of the other features of the subscription can be turned off to make the user experience easy if required.

Just go with G Suite.
For free, I use an alias with Gmail, Then domain is with freeparking, DNS is with cloudflare, Mail stuffs is with mailgun..
Works, Somewhat..

Whoops - typo. It's per month from Google yes. USD $12 per year from Zoho is pretty cheap but yes for the features and ability to simplify the experience - G Suite!

Also check out MXroute, I haven't had issues but their focus isn't on providing support.

Fastmail business purport to be 9$USD per user per month. A good friend of mine shifted from gmail to zoho and seems happy with it for personal use. I don't have any complaints with Fastmail who I've been with since Vodafone scuttled their webmail much to my irritation. Storage per user is 100GB, under the "professional" package and domains are supported.

What appeals to me about Fastmail is that apart from the many excellent features, they have a server point of presence in not only New York but also around Australia and Europe if I'm not mistaken. Their privacy policies operate under Australian law which works fine for me, and I would think most other normal people who needn't shell out for exotic solutions like Proton mail et al.

I would recommend Fastmail also (PM if interested in referral), and have been using it for quite a while in an effort to escape some of Google's ecosystem. They have POP/IMAP/SMTP, web interface is good, app is OK, emails go in, emails go out. Have nothing to complain about, really, other than not having moved to it earlier. I believe they are also pioneering JMAP, which seems poised to be the next email protocol..

MXRoute is great, except I find a lot of email gets tagged as spam and the only way to prevent it is to whitelist senders. You really need to keep an eye on the default email spam folder otherwise you'll miss lots of emails, which to me look nothing like spam

They also have CalDav and CardDav support, and a ton of other features. The other key benefit over the others is that their primary business is e-mail, unlike some web host who offers e-mail as a bonus.

Yes and I've found support respond very fast to any queries, usually the same day. Their Blog is a good read, and illustrates well their transparency on technology decisions, as well as policy. I'd go so far as to say they are passionate about email which may be because they are dedicated to it as you say.

My endorsement of G suite is slightly tainted because as an early adopter (of G Apps originally) my account is free.

Yes have decided down the mxroute path for now. If it doesnt work out no big deal, can move them somewhere else. For the most part reviews have been good from what Ive seen with the odd person being negative about them. I fully understand its a no frills service which is totally fine with me as long as it works reliably.

Fastmail is good, I have a few mailboxes for a few years and haven't had any problem. I'm on an older grandfathered plan which is good value, but when priced the same as Google Mail at us$5 per month I rate Gmail higher. If I had to move I'd also look at Zoho for personal mail. I wouldn't run my own email server, even though I have a server with capacity.

Suggest you stick with Zoho, can't see any reason you can't reuse the phone number for activation.

If you're just after hosted email, check out Migadu. I've been using them for a while and am pretty happy with them. They have calendar support coming soon, but at the moment they only provide email hosting. No limits on storage, or accounts, or domains - they just provide limits on outbound emails - but even their basic plan should be fine for most people.
