Use to do on call and found it a pain and was only getting 2 hours a week in extra pay. Also looking after a system I didn’t even support during my normal business hours.

Got so sick of it I would just call my boss every time I got a call as I had no idea how to fix a system I don’t normally use.

Some companies are good and worth the extra $$$ others not so good and just expect it from you. The issue is that you can’t really do anything when on call. Can’t go to the movies or weekends away, getting woken up at 2am etc.

My view on this now is if you need to be a 24/7 company then hire staff to cover 24/7 I.e. night time staff

tehgerbil:

So what you're saying is your liberty is constantly being offered for free to the company to be used whenever they please.

Your company is getting a really good deal from you aren't they?

You really don't know if that is true.

There is every chance the on call is included in the package.
Every situation is unique.

I get paid about $35/day during the week for being on standby, $50 weekend and public holidays.
Phone fix calls are at the equivalent of an hour pay at my salary and that’s the minimum payment, remote calls 1.5 x at 2hr minimum.
After 10pm and before 7am, and all day Sunday, it’s double time for both.

Doesn’t get particularly busy but we do it for a week at a time on a roster so it’s a nice extra bit anyway.

No way I’d be doing it without a standby payment tho, it’s all remote work but we have to be able to remote in within 20minutes from wherever we are. Kind of limits what you can do when you have to carry a laptop everywhere you go.

Take a read of this employment court decision against NZ post: https://www.employmentcourt.govt.nz/assets/Documents/Decisions/EMPC-114-2018-Postal-Workers-Union-of-Aotearoa-Inc-v-New-Zealand-Post-Ltd-Media-Release.pdf

I very much like this bit:

The Court emphasised that the availability provisions appear to reflect a statutory recognition that an employee’s time is a commodity which has a value. That, it was said, ought not to be regarded as a startling or novel proposition. The value of an employee’s otherwise private time applies equally whether they are waiting to be called in for work or on the off-chance they might be required to undertake additional hours of work at the end of their usual working day. In either case theemployee is forgoing opportunities in their private life.
