We have seen a few people pay and get their data back. The whole thing is predicated off the fact that the data must be returned if the ransom is paid. If there is a reasonable chance of not getting your data back, then the entire scheme is compromised.

It's in the interest of the hacker to provide decryption and I have heard stories of rogue operators being taken out by other ransomware "firms" for failing to do so.

Ive had to clean up quite a few ransomware attacks .
Its a mess to clean up & I prefer a wipe & reload of affected PC's / servers . Thats not allways an option though .

They are all slightly different, and are evolving .
Many remove themselves after encrypting data : so AV wont detect it .
Many will encrypt across network shares . Some also encrypt cloud synced files .
Some only encrypt docs txt pdf jpg etc . Some encrypt system files leaving PC/servers in a really bad state .

Many seem to come from clicking on links in emails . The user often wont admit that though
