Leaving out information can certainly help.

I used to get no call backs when I submitted my CV, but after going over it again and removing the section where I discussed in detail my ideas for melting old people down for soap, I got a number of interviews.

Turns out interviewers don't want to hear about your plans for melting old people down for soap, so nothing came of the interviews, but certainly removing that from the CV helped with that initial foot in the door.  I'm now on some sort of black list now for any jobs at retirement villages, but I guess that's probably irrelevant to this discussion.

YMMV.

Every software developer CV should have a link to a portfolio page.  Show off what you can do with real examples.  That puts people at the head of the queue when I am reviewing CVs.
