Not an answer to "should I pay or not" but in response to a backup strategy. I just use Backblaze and the Synology Backup app. Terabytes of data, with versioning, cost me $100/month. Worth it. None of that "local HDD that needs rotating".

Comet Backup has a synology app available now.
Link that to Wasabi which has storage available in AUS now and it works great.

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

That's certainly what the customers of the more than 10,000 servers recently thought. And the implied answer to the ransom was „never pay“.

Data centres undoubtedly have their justification and I also use them hybrid - but as long as the TBW for NAS NVMe are still comparatively expensive, "in rust we trust" (and ZFS) applies for me.
