I've done some research with the different companies (asked them to quote for around the same amount of national/international bandwidth, plus a similar 12 month term) and here's what I've come up with (1U server, colo), in order of most expensive to cheapest:

ICONZ
+ Good solid shared firewall
+ Central Auckland location
- 12 month contract

Maxnet
+ Unlimited national traffic
- 3 year term

WebDrive
+ Cheap shared firewall
+ One free (per month) supervised visit
+ No install fee (it seems)

Orcon
+ 14 IP addresses included (wow!)
+ Free visits on Wednesdays
+ Unlimited national bandwidth
- 12 month contract

HostingDirect
+ Unmetered national/international bandwidth
+ One free visit a month
+ No term
+ 2 static IPs

* NB: There is a pricing discount for the longer signup terms (ie 36 months vs 12 months)

Useful summary, will be interesting to see where Maxnet falls.  Also did you confirm HostingDirect directs data center is just leased cabinet space in Orcon's DC?  Where is webdrive's DC?

scottjpalmer: HostingDirect is in Orcon's DC

I've updated my post as I heard back from Maxnet this morning.

Interesting about HostingDirect, I thought they had their own data-centre from this comment on their site:

Hosting Direct offers Colocation from our brand new, secure datacentre located on Auckland's North Shore in New Zealand.  We are so confident that you will be blown away by our impressive datacentre facility that we invite you to take a tour of our datacentre before signing up.

OT, this web-hoster looks like a good contender.

You can choose your contract term, you just get a discount for taking a longer contract and can get shared firewall services.... I assume you were qouted for 'common' shared colo right?

Good point, I've updated my original post to indicate this.

And yes I was quoted common shared colo.

Hostingdirect are pretty good.

I have 1U with them and look after a rack in maxnet.

So far so good with hosting direct (week 1 :-)    )
