after reading up on google your right
all the certs i have used over they years have a been www.site.com and site.com
so i thought it was the case
some companies do www.site.com for free when you do site.com

Please never do this. It is not a good solution.

Probably not since that is exactly how the "redirects but keep your domain showing" crap works on DNS providers that are overstepping the mark with what they are selling to people leading to this sort of confusion.

If you are using Cloudflare, you could always proxy the domain you want to redirect FROM and have it issue you SSL/TLS Certs automatically then set a redirect

I know why you're saying this, and I kind of agree with you. But using Cloudflare for this type of situation is not really a band-aid. It's a solid solution and there's nothing wrong with the approach.
Thank you everyone for your thoughts. We've gone back to the web developer and he's accepted our recommendation of a new certificate to cover www and non-www access to the site.
