In terms of qualifications, our son completed a Batchelor of Software Engineering at Media Design School in Auckland. After qualifying, the group he completed his final submission with, developed a game amongst themselves that was good enough that the group had it produced by some outfit in the USA and I believe it's still available on Steam (although when they got poached a number of months later they had to cease development/updates). The group that were poached consisted of two developers and two designers, and they were paid to move to the UK to work for an American company five and a half years ago. To cut a longer story short, he's currently working in Brighton, England, for IO Interactive and earning good coin and certainly more than he'd be earning in NZ.

I don't know what the trick is, but working with others who are also looking for work, to produce something playable and getting it up on the likes of Steam seems to have had a lot to do with it.

People often mistake me for an adult because of my age.

Keep calm, and carry on posting.

The tricks is your son had a product that could be shown, and was willing to move.

Anytime someone can put on their CV, "Here's the location of a product I helped develop" you've jumped ahead of 90% of entry-level applicants

May not be relevant on your son, but having an address and phone number in the country you apply to will get you past 95% of applicants.

Your son should go ahead and get a Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), and open a US bank account.

Be honest about to work status: "Currently I need an H-1B Visa sponsorship to work in the US, but I'm willing to move anywhere I'm needed. I can work remotely immediately while Visa is sorted. I have a US ITIN and US bank account."

Google "virtual office" to get a mail drop in any large city worldwide. I'd suggest San Jose California in the US.

Skype and many others will get you a local phone number.
