Southern Cross Cable termination building is in the vicinity of all 3 DC's. I've heard that is the reason for their locations, but it wasn't from a geeky source, so I'm happy to be corrected.

I assume you mean the termination of the Aussie leg? The USA leg terminates in Northcote I believe.

Would be a reasonable reason to be based there though -- the closer to SYD ping-wise the better perhaps.

I think there is a building around 153 Brigham Creek rd that indicates on some maps it is a cable landing station, if this is true then it is pretty close to the 3 DCs for sure.

The more likely issue is some random construction or earthmoving ditch digging in between digging up the data feeds.

I'd hate to be the person at the front desk dealing with randoms insisting they fix their free gmail or outlook mail and the people turning up at AWS asking about their late Amazon orders..

You won't get to the front desk without identifying yourself at the gate, which won't be opened until your identity is matched to a scheduled visit. At least that's the case at other datacentres I've visited some years ago, and I imagine security is even more robust these days.
