So thanks to the recent KMart announcement for their new store in Westgate it appears that NZ Retail Property Group have confirmed the locations of the  DCI, Microsoft and Amazon DCs out at Westgate. I can't imagine that any of these organisations are overly impressed.

The location of the Amazon data centre was already well known.

It's about as secret as the BT Tower in London.

Curious why the comment about not being impressed?

Vendors don't advertise the exact location of their data centers. Microsoft for example say NZ North is "around Auckland" but usually its not hard to figure out.

Ahh, I thought the comment was about not being impressed with the locations.  Upon a couple of re reads I think you might be saying "not improessed" with the locations being made public like that.
Correct me if I am mistaken.

The first time I've noticed the similarity right next to each other on the map.

I’m surprised they put both in close proximity to a retail and industrial space. Surely this isn’t great from a physical security perspective.

I agree. Three major DCs this close is "interesting"

Amazon and Microsoft have always made it clear they don't want their DC locations to be "public knowledge". For those of us in IT we know where they are, but placing their logos on a map might provoke an interesting response.

My biggest question from this image is what happened to Raupō Drive? Did it turn into Te Māra Road ?

I don't think they care, or have any expectation it won't be public knowledge eventually.  That's why so much is invested in perimeter security infrastructure.  Same with the Spark and Datacom DCs of old.

Those who want to know will find out. My interest in mobile networks means I know where the mobile carriers have their switching centers even though most of these aren't signposted as such. Lots of hints if you know where to look etc -- many years I found out where VF MSC is in Auckland because they registered a cell site license in RSM for "<name of street> MSC" -- popped around for a look and sure enough no cell tower but a nondescript building with heaps of AC like telco buildings tend to etc. I leave it as a exercise to figure out which one. :)

If you read the docs of certain AWS services such as S3, their docs explain they host S3 data across >=3 data centers in each region (so 3x in SYD, 3x in MEL, etc) which is transparently displayed as one region via the S3 API. I think it would be logical to I assume AWS is using that building for one of the 3 AKL data centers. The other two I assume they'll co-locate in other buildings (probably CBD, Albany, etc) as they do overseas as perhaps the other 2 just need to replicate the main data center and won't necessarily host all the services (i.e. could just be for S3 and other services that are designed to operate across 3 data centers).

Southern Cross Cable termination building is in the vicinity of all 3 DC's. I've heard that is the reason for their locations, but it wasn't from a geeky source, so I'm happy to be corrected.
