Has anyone audited any of the data centre providers?
Do you mean something like this for example?

If they don't have an external audit the next best thing is to ask for their internal proceedure manual. This should cover security, power, connectivity, fire prevention. It will give you a sence of how they run their ship. If they can't evidence their internal controls then most probably they don't have their "house in order" and there are gemlins out there waiting to be discovered.

I'm not sure how willing some will be to provide all the details, 'some parts' will be commercially sensitive. I guess track record is a good indication as pretty much EVERY data centre over the last few years has lost one of of their main power feeds needing to run on batteries / generators, or had some peice of networking equipment fail and needed to rely on a redundand switch/router.
The second part to the argument is then actually using all those features like Independant A and B power with UPS protection, dual uplink switches, HSRP, BGP fail over etc etc. There is no point being in a facility that offers such forms of redundancy then to not use it properly. I think some sort of expectation needs to be set. You do get what you pay for.
