If you are creating backup exec image/files of your servers then I guess you're only wanting to store those online.

I would have thought you should be able to setup the program to only backup those files.

I store Backup Exec System Restore in a local attached storage unit for faster restore if needed. I store SQL DB and IIS files on an online backup offsite in case the whole thing comes down.

We don't store Backup Exec System Restore images offsite because they are rather large and backup times would not be effective for security.

Yes, I am paranoid about backup.

Any reason you have your heart set on Online, I guess it's cheaper. But what about a tape based (LTO) type solution. I know we use those at work in our datacenters.

Just means you'd have more control over your backups (grandfather, father, son) and could potentially work down to baremetal backups if needed.

online provides offsite backup for redundancy. if your servers and onsite tape crumble in a building along with an earthquake then you're screwed. you can pay for someone to offsite tapes, but that can be more expensive, and a lot more effort than online. online typically holds the backup in raid arrays whereas tape is often a SPOF. tape is a lot more effort to get data back online from too.

i remember codeblue advertising that they were launching an online backup option a while back. not sure if they have pricing online either but worth a look.

someone tweeted me a link to http://www.angelbackup.com/ too. they seem to indicate configurable retention policies (including never delete) and server backup options as well as multiple pc backup from one account. might be worth a look

How much data are you planning to store? I'm in the process of setting an online backup service for my clients and am aiming for a price point of $1 per GB storage costs. So this works out well for small customers who only need to back up 50-100GB, but quickly adds up when backing up hundreds of GBs.

As davidcole mentioned above, backing up to tape and storing offsite is often more beneficial than an online backup - especially if the online backup is going to take you a couple of days to restore. Online Security Services - http://www.onlinesecurity.co.nz/data_security.html - offer a tape storage system where a secure courier picks up the last-used tape every morning and drops off the next tape to be used. Their building is designed to be secure against just about anything including: theft, earthquakes, floods, fire, etc... You'll be paying around $85 per week for a single tape backup with a 10 tape rotation policy. Considering that you can fit over 800GB on a single LTO4 tape, it's not a bad option if you're backing up a lot of data (even though it does seem a bit old-school!)

I really like the DataLock having datacentres in AKL and WLG - but they didn't even bother replying to my query sent 24 hours ago, so how can I be sure they will answer if I do have a problem?

At the moment I am looking at JungleDisk. The problem is that MozyPro charges in advance and we have already paid up to October this year. So I might get some critical servers on a new service and move the others later.

I will think about this over the next couple of days.

OK - I found the source of that comparison chart. It was from the Data Vault website - no wonder they came out tops. Do you work for them, or do you have some sort of financial interest in people signing up with them? Do you need to disclose anything to us....?

Some of our clients (small to medium) use this service. Extremely user friendly when a backup needs to be recovered and secure. Not sure if it fits the specs you're after though.

I just wanted to say that i like this provider and the only thing i'm doing is giving some information about this company. Sorry if i misled you guyes in one way or another. I would sincerly like to apologise for not getting back to you regarding your request for more information about DataLock. During the time you sent your request through, we were reconfiguring the way we receive enquiries, and yours must have slipped through the cracks, I do apologise.

DataLock does have servers here in New Zealand, and our clients data is held on New Zealand based servers. The advantage of this (and this goes for most real NZ providers), is that you can do the first backup via an External HDD. You can also restore your data via an External HDD (often in the same day). I do not know the people at Mozzie (yet), but I would imagine that they would offer the same solution as us. We run a desktop and server client, meaning you can backup files, Exchange Databases, SQL (MS and My), Oracle and Lotus. Also, we can backup Disk Images too through a relationship with Storage Craft.

People have mentioned on this thread that we only resell, this is correct. We are the company behind many of NZ based backup solutions, including some mentioned here. This is also the reason you won't find pricing on our website, as many of our resellers price their service differently, or bundle it into other products.

We do have a couple of new exciting resellers coming online soon who will be offering backup solutions to the public at great rates, and you will be able to signup instantly online - and with trial period as well. They won't even ask for your Credit Card.

I endevour to be open and frank about the way DataLock runs, and do admit to having let sales related tickets slip through the cracks lately. For this I apologise. We are gearing up for a very exciting 2010.

I hope this won't be seen as a plug for DataLock, just an explaination of how we operate in the market, and an admission that we are not perfect!
