magu: VMware has vCenter Server (and Client). XenServer (Citrix) has XenCenter (just a client).

so you mean to say the vCenter is a server based management tool (managing HVD & other virtual solutions?.) where as xencenter is a standalone client.

Sorry but on the vendors website just a general description is given its hard to understand how all this is inter-related.

To leverage all of VMware's vSphere features (resource pooling, VM migration, HA, etc) you need to have a Windows machine (can be a VM) with vCenter Server installed.

XenServer does not need a centralized management server to be able to use VM migration and HA. All servers can be clustered without the need of a central connection.

Anything with VT-x or AMD-V should be a good starter. When you're ready to step up, find a used Blade server (with VT-x or AMD-V instructions and good RAID cards) and you're away. That second bit is ~$5k.
