Just set up a google apps domain last night as someone on here had commented about it. Seems pretty good so far.

Just make sure that the organisation in question fully understands the implications not only of using cloud-based services in general, but the privacy implications, and legislative (if applicable to their industry) implications of the cloud-based services.

"Google glitch disable 150,000 accounts" (http://mashable.com/2011/02/27/gmail-glitch/) and "Gmail accidentallu resetting accounts, years of correspondence vanish into the cloud" (http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/27/gmail-accidentally-resetting-accounts-years-of-correspondence-v/).

There seems to be the answer to the OP statement "Gmail is more reliable than Exchange"...

I doubt it. Perception is everything. When Hotmail goes down you see a load of people complaining, and tweets... Gmail goes down (or worst, things are deleted) and people go very quiet, least they displease their brand du jour...

oh i think there are a few seriously pissed off users after this one....  logging in and finding GB's of email "gone" tends to get someone a bit riled up

the fact that they are still not back online for everyone wont help either.

Google people are probably a bit like apple people....

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

We've been converting lots of small businesses to Gmail lately.  Many go for the free option which has been rock-solid.  Many of these clients like to use Outlook which they still can.

I'm surprised by the number of small NZ businesses that have their own domain name and associated website but still use an xtra.co.nz or paradise.net.nz contact email address!

No surprises there at all. And I find it very unprofessional when I see a web address, and the email comes from xtra.co.nz or whatever other ISP they use... One of the simplest things to do to keep your brand always visible is the email, and they let it slip.
