From the Google Enterprise blog:

In 2010, Gmail was available 99.984 percent of the time, for both business and consumer users. 99.984 percent translates to seven minutes of downtime per month over the last year. That seven-minute average represents the accumulation of small delays of a few seconds, and most people experienced no issues at all. For those few who were disrupted for a longer period of time, we're very sorry, and Google Apps for Business customers received compensation where appropriate. We're particularly pleased with this level of reliability since it was accomplished without any planned downtime while launching 30 new features and adding tens of millions of active users.

Seven minutes of downtime compares very favorably with on-premises email, which is subject to much higher rates of interruption that hurt employee productivity. The latest research from the Radicati Group found that on-premises email averaged 3.8 hours of downtime per month. In comparison to Radicati's metrics for on-premises email, our calculations suggest that Gmail is 32 times more reliable than the average email system, and 46 times more available than Microsoft Exchange.

Interesting article, I like how they make that final distinction between the average email system and Microsoft exchange.

The comparison is very much dependant upon how Exchange is set up in the reference data centres. TBH, you can't draw any conclusions from the article without first knowing more details of the study.

I agree, I am a Gmail fan but have had issues with clients WM6.5 devices syncing with Gmail, much of these issues seem to have totally ironed out over the last few months, but 6months ago it was all over the place, I suggest it was a major headache for Google to ensure the GoogleSync product worked very reliably.

That all said my personal phone (HTC Magic) works just like.... "magic", rarely any issues, one would say a superb service, android and Gmail are good partners.

How did they come up with 4 hours of downtime per month for on premises exchange, that seems overblown to me.

I would guess they are looking at stats for standalone SBS type servers with no HA and counting patching/windows updates done outside of business hours as "downtime".

I love gmail as my personal email, but the Gmail app just doesn't cut it for me...the look, feel and usability? Outlook wins hands-down.

That's interesting because Google changed its SLA today... Until now the old text made sure a downtime wasn't counted as downtime unless it was a continuous set time, which seemed to skew the uptime a lot.

We are looking at changing to gmail for business email. We are currently running SBS with Exchange 2003 here at work - I loosely oversee the IT here with outsource to BTG.

A few in the office are moving to Apple computers running Entourage for email as the latest Outlook for Mac is not compat w/ Exchange 2003. So a good time to consider options.

However, I note from reading forums, etc that the gmail app doesnt have a similar Public Folders option for shared email across the business? I know MS is moving away from Public Folders also, so wondering what is the best way to deal with filing shared emails across the business - is this possible with gmail app and a 3rd party app?

how are other ppl dealing with this with either option?

johnr: Gmail service is rock solid

Agreed. I've been using it as my primary email since its first invitation only beta. Its served me well over the years, with only one significant outage I can recall.

They have a similar function called gmail delegation.

You need to set up and pay for another google apps business user and define it as public.

I'll check it out - have you used the gmail delegation at all for public folder type use, work well? I have a gmail business trial underway at the moment so i'll see if i can try this out.

With the Exchange hosted services, thoughts on oversea's based hosting vs local?

cheers
