I decided Crashplan over Backblaze due to the fact it is unlimited backups and there is a Docker image that I can run on my NAS.

I'm averaging a whopping 8.4Mbps and have 3TB that needs catching up. Can you advise what version number of CrashPlan your Docker image is? Also what ISP are you with?

I 100% don't think it's an ISP or routing issue, as I can restore at 200+Mbps, but good to know for comparison sake so I can tell support that I know people who are getting far better speeds than me.

I've opened a support ticket with CrashPlan, but I don't expect to get much help there as they seem to think anything better than 2 or 3 Mbps is good.

CrashPlan memory usage is pretty low (less than 800MB), and CPU utilisation is less than 1%

Just looking at CrashPlan under task manager. Is that not correct?

EDIT: Java Platform SE Binary using less than 250MB

Just wanted to make sure comparisons were accurate...

According to the Processes Tab in Task Manager (Windows 10), the Code42 CrashPlan Backup Service is using 155.4MB. That's with five backup sets ranging from 211GB to 10.0TB, ~17.6TB total. The working set (Details tab) was ~187MB.

Same version of the app then, except mine is just running standard on Windows 10.

I'm on Spark Fibre Max, but since I can restore in excess of 200Mbps I wouldn't have thought it is an ISP issue, as I assume it would use the same route for backups and restores.

I'm experimenting trying to figure out my slowed down CrashPlan speeds.

I setup a VM and set up a trial CrashPlan account to see if they were throttling my account, and this is actually going even slower.

However, I see that the trial account has put my repo in a US server, where my proper account is on the Australian server.

@michaelmurfy are you able to confirm what CrashPlan server your repo is located on, and whether you are still getting 90Mbps transfer speeds you started with?

Mine is running on a synology nas via a custom docker image and is/has been backing up to Aus since the beginning... No change there and it maxes my VDSL upload fine.

@Paul1977 appears to be "boh-sea.crashplan.com" and they're now rate limiting me to 12Mbit average (for the last 24hrs). Going to message their support but am not counting on much...

@michaelmurfy yep, that's a US server. Seems odd that they would put new NZ accounts onto a US server instead of the Aussie one. 176ms ping and 20 hops to US compared to 40ms ping and 11 hops to Aussie. Not that being on the Aussie server is helping me at the moment.

I'm sure I've read in their FAQ that they claim they don't rate limit users, but it certainly seems that way. I hope they don't limit you even further - mine seems to be averaging out at about 8.5Mbps to the Aussie server (fluctuates constantly between about 5Mbps and 12Mbps).

Good luck with their support, but I suspect we'll both be pushing sh*t uphill. I haven't had a reply to my ticket yet.

I assume you have already set compression to OFF and dedupe to MINIMAL?

VDSL upload is about 10Mbps max though right?

My issue is I had been getting uploads to CrashPlan in excess of 200Mbps, then in mid December it dropped right down.

Yeah VDSL isn't that high but I was describing consistency. Mine is located at the aussie server though... How much have you stored, maybe they've moved around based on storage amount? I'm just over 1gb of stored stuff.

Do you mean 1TB? Surely you're not paying CrashPlan rates for only backing up 1GB?

My backup is pretty big and has been growing considerably over the last several months, but my case I am still on the Aussie server. However the trial I just set up was put on the US server.

That wouldn't explain the issue @michaelmurfy is in where he started a couple of days ago with 90-100Mbps to the US server, which has since dropped to 12Mbps.

In my opinion the drops in speed for both of us were too sudden, and the reduced speed too consistent, for it to be anything other than artificial rate limiting.

I can certainly understand why they might need to rate limit, but it should be clearly spelled out if this is the case so users can make an informed decision on whether the service will suit their needs.
