So trying feedly again. I'll admit works pretty well for blog/news based content.

But its overwhelming and fairly useless for monitoring forums (like GZ etc) where there's a large number of article headlines that you problem skip over. It doesn't seem to mark as read when you go to the next section (and there's no key for the next section).

It s problem I found wth GR as well, they're designed around skipping an article - like you're reading all of them. RSS readers were at their best when there was a large number of headlines, and up only opened the interesting ones, marking everything else as read.

very sad to hear that.

I use google reader regularly to feed information from various site then stream it to iPad to read it.

I hope they hear their customers and review their decisions.

I have just closed google plus on all my google accounts, putting the google reader closure as the reason.

If I didnt have 1000s of forums and other stuff with my gmail addresses, and need it for my smartphone I would just close the whole google account.

If you have turned on google plus then perhaps go and close it since its pretty useless to be honest, give google less than they had before since they are giving you less.

Just heard that BlackPixel from netnewswire fame is resurrecting the platform for the mac, and has rebuilt the ios apps. That is awesome but:

not on NZ app store....Dammit.

Any more details? Any likelyhood it will not be canned?

Feedly is ok, but it won't support authentication required feeds which is annoying. I'd prefer a 32bit application, but once that syncs between pc's.

I still haven't find (not looking hard, granted) a good replacement. I use FeedDemon (also retiring now) to sync to Google Reader and it's great. Like yourself I rather have an application on my laptop than a "service"...

I've signed up to feedly, which is still using google reader, and have been using rssowl which syncs with google reader for a client.

Not quite as good as feeddemon, as it doesn;t have the 3 line summary mode prevavlent in there. But its setill being developed at least, and hoping they'll switch to feedly.

Failing that I have tiny tiny rss set up at home, and that is quite good (web based) but also has an api, so I may end up trying to customise rssowl, or finding some other open source base and integrating with ttr.

I have made the complete switch to G+

Its not a perfect conversion which is what many of you are wanting,

I changed and I am very happy on g+, it suits my needs and i enjoy using it.

I think for some users this will also suffice, I wrote a 10 day review on how to adapt to using G+ as a news aggregate.

Some of you should consider it but I am aware that its no replacement, its more an adaption and change.

My theory was, What if this happens again? What if feedly goes under etc, my theory was abandon RSS and move on. Google is pouring money into g+ and funding + people were pulled from Greader to put into g+ for a fair while before the pull.

Google+ is completely different from RSS. You might want to revise the whole RSS use case before saying "Twitter can replace a feed reader" or "Google+ is a valid replacement for a reader".

Different beasts.

People use RSS to subscribe to information put out by certain websites.

I follow peoples / companies / websites circles to subscribe to information put out by them.

I don't quite see the difference, RSS is just a way of getting news, Like I said I am abandoning RSS for another means of getting my news and it works...for me, just thought I would put that out their.

RSS is great to catch blog posts, news stories, etc. Social networks have too much noise. It's too distracting.

Thats fine, my issue was with you telling me I can't sit here and suggest g+ as an alternate to RSS

because I can because I have done it, and to filter out the noise I have circle called "tech" it really helps

Plus: have you not realized that their are plenty of people on this forum and others alike that have not happily found a replacement? Half the comments here are " im currently using XX but it doesn't do this this this this and this"

Reader was mainly a way to manage RSS feeds. But you can manage them manually yourself, or use an RSS reader. I use operas RSS system which is quite good. I believe google has abandoned it due to it bypassing advertising, and they want people to use systems that will allow them to pump out their adverts to people.

I look after a website that regularly publishes articles, and I wrote a RSS component to produce an RSS feed of the articles. If Google says I'm now supposed to use social media instead of RSS, how do I get my content out onto the social media sites? Do I need to read up on Twitter, G+ and Facebook APIs and hope I can get them to work with my website? Sounds like a bit much effort!
