timmmay: HostGator has all their support in the USA. If anyone wants a discount coupon I can do 20% off I think, I'm an affiliate - I use them myself for websites that get 2 million hits a month and was recommending them anyway, so I signed up to their program.

Most people who recommend them are affiliates, and thats how they get a lot of customers as people post reviews with affiliate links. Anyone can signup as an affiliate. Last time I use their online chat, which was a few weeks ago as I needed some hosting for a particular site, they didn't read the question properly and had to ask them the same queston 3 times, and eventually gave up. Emailed them them too, and never got a reply. I think they have recently changed ownership.

crazed: I gave up on NZ hosting 2 yrs ago, host mostly out of Aussie now.

NZ hosting provides good quality hosting, but their costs scare most away. My last NZhosting was with Sitehost.

Solely depends who you use. There are some really good ones and some not so good ones. There are also some expensive ones in the US too. Hosting reliability and performance can vary a lot, some have really poor uptime, and schedule maintenance during NZ peak times.  There are however some benefits with hosting in NZ which you can't get from hosting in the US, such as maintenance performance in offpeak times.

I recommended them before I was an affiliate, I joined because I figured I could make beer money.  Notice I didn't include a link - just an offer if anyone wants a coupon. Like I said earlier I run multiple websites off one $10/month account, 2 million hits per month, problems are exceedingly rare and performance is good. They're one of the biggest hosts in the US now, I've been using them for perhaps 5 years, before that I tried quite a few hosts and none measured up.

I haven't heard of any change of ownership. I find their service fantastic, their support knows more about hosting than I do to a crazy degree. I asked a rather technical question once about spam blocking that involved DNS entries and allowed hosts (I forget the details), they had someone who knew about it and gave me a great answer. My emails have always been answered promptly, but I've never used live chat.

I'm not trying to sell them. I don't much care if anyone uses them or not.

Maybe it is a problem with their sales team, but not to reply to a sales enquiry email isn't good though.

I have used them before and found them good for what it is. But there are also others that are just as good out there for that sort of low cost US hosting. But there are some negatives with them, such as only weekly backups, and they also restrict the number of files you can have hosted.  They call then inodes. eg if you go over 100,000 inodes in the account they stop backing up, and this apparently includes emails too, and this is on the plan they call unlimited. Most hosts I find do daily ones.

I did look in their forums for answers and there were some that had recently said that they were having trouble with support times, and one of their staff had replied with.

As you may likely be aware having done business with us the past few years we’ve grown continuously and at times unfortunately found our growth and marketing outpacing the rate at which we can staff support. While we’re not happy to see that occurring, unfortunately that’s the situation we’re facing currently.

I may give them a go for a particular site I need to host in the US, as my past experience about 3 years ago was good. Just this time with trying to get answers, it was a mission. One I was recommended in the US is Surpass Hosting and they have been very responsive to sales questions.

BTW what are the support ticket response times you are getting at the moment.

Personally I use 247hosting.co.nz

Not too sure if they'll have what you'll need but they seem to have good support, uptime, quality and best of all prices.

(I've used them for 5 months straight now with no problems)

Best of luck with your search!

What company do you work for?

Interesting about the 100K limit, I checked my control panel and you're right, I'm at 105K files and I'm not being backed up. To be fair I host around 20 websites on that $10 account, but they should really tell people that not hide it in the control panel.

Support response times are usually in the region of 15-60 minutes, though can be more for complex queries.

.net 4.5 is still a relatively new technology and a friend who works for openhost mentioned it would be still another 6 months or so away as it will need to be tested and If I remember correctly Openhost use Plesk 9.5 which from memory does not support .net 4.5 yet which means it will need to wait for openhost to install plesk 11 for windows. which could be sometime away.

I would be keen to set up a windows server with the latest technology if i could find enough people willing to split the costs.

A windows VPS is about $129.00 + plesk for $15. so totally $144 per month if split between say 10 people could bring the price to about $10 per month and everybody could have traffic of 2 -3 gb and 1 -2 GB disk space

If interested let me know and I will see what can be done
