Have you configured it with a storage pool in Windows 2012? Or using the built in Raid?

Nety: freitasm does it support S3 sleep? The old one only supported S4 even though the chipset did include S3 but HP had disabled it.


I am working on it - I actually can't find Sleep/Hibernate options on a fresh assisted install (drivers are installed since this was an assisted install initiated from the ROM menus).

If you're game, there are a number of BIOS mods available for the Gen7 N40L (probably works on 36/54 also) that will enable S3, as well as set the SATA controller to 3Gbps on all ports, instead of 1.5Gbps.

I don't have a SmartArray on this box. I am waiting for a second 3TB drive and will use Storage Spaces to configure some RAID 1.

Note that bays 0 and 1 are 6GB/s and bays 2 and 3 are 3GB/s.

Here is my server with all HDD installed:



The crossed out drives are external USB ones use to copy data from my old NAS. The two 3TB WD are now one mirror set (Data#2). Data#1 is a 1TB drive I will use for Crashplan backup from LAN (we still do the backups to Crashplan servers anyway, but this is for faster restore if needed).

The Data partition in the first drive will be removed as soon as everything is copied into the mirrored set.

Might toy with the option of installing my 256GB SSD in the DVD bay and use it for boot. Not critical at the moment though unless more storage space is needed - not for the moment being.

The unit won't support sleep as it's disabled in ROM. According to HP it's designed to be an always on machine.

Just got the WD Green model. I have 1x 3TB WD Green and 1x 2TB Seagate Green in my old NAS, so got a second 3TB WD Green to create the mirrored set. The 2TB Seagate drive is "Disk 1".

How come you went with a generic dynamic disk raid 1 rather than putting the disks in a storage pool and creating a mirrored disk from that?

If it was a different type of RAID, then yeah. But it's a simple mirror so easier to just get today through Computer Management.

What about the ability to just add disk to the pool and expand the virtual mirrored disk across the new physical disks?

This might be something interesting for later - at the moment the first drive is a 500GB, the second 2TB and then the 2x 3TB. Not really going to use it all up, I'm afraid - not like some people I know who MUST. HAVE. THE . ENTIRE. INTERNET. AT. HOME...

Mainly serving files, but installed a SSL cert, will configure a SSTP VPN server soon, as well as a download station. Running Crashplan on this box as well to receive local backups - while we all continue to backup to the Crashplan servers, a local backup is useful for quick restore if needed.

Will you just use Microsoft RAS to create the VPN or third party software?

Not quite. The Crashplan server creates a local copy in a folder with a funny structure. My local PCs will continue to backup to Crashplan servers, and this is an additional copy.

Microsoft RAS, since this will be a SSTP. I am inclined to perhaps run a small *NIX VM to host an OpenVPN server - if I do this might not run the RAS. Will decide this tomorrow.
