They don't have a cloud. They're a software provider that lets you back up to the backup storage of your choice. BackBlaze B2, AWS, Azure, Google, Dropbox, any many many more.

So you mean the personal Backblaze you have to pay storage separately, like Cloudberry? That's not what I read on their Backblaze consumer page.

Sorry, didn't read the questions right. CloudBerry you pay for storage separately. BackBlaze it's $5 a month including unlimited storage. I'll go edit my last couple of answers.

Got a reply from Backblaze on Twitter. Server OS requires B2 and integrations - it won't run the personal backup.

Sync to online storage is actually viable, if the online storage keeps versions - like B2 and S3 do. Sync to a hard drive doesn't keep versions so it's not really a backup - you want incremental backups to local disks.

This is bad news as I am a crashplan user. I have signed up with BackBlaze so hopefully they are a good enough replacement. I will set it up tonight.

On the subject of crashplan, has anybody else been having issues with their credit card auto-renewel service? Over the last few months my auto renewal has always failed. I have to login and manually pay by credit card. I have canceled the auto-renewal now anyway, even though it did not seem to be working properly.

But that's pointing at all the NAS offerings, which isn't quite right ether, and I didn't see a windows server integration as an option.

I am running Crashplan in a jail on my FreeNAS box, and backing up all my data to their Aus servers. So my requirements are pretty simple. I am thinking (hoping) that a B2 backend with something like Duplicity or qBackup running as a cron job will get me most of the way there in replacing CP.

I will just have to figure out a decent way to monitor and report to ensure the backups are running. That was nice with CP - getting a weekly email confirming 100% of my backups had run etc.

It wont fix the peer to peer backup features, which you'll probably have to roll your own.

Backblaze is awesome. I've used it for several years with no issue. They bootstrapped their business model so didn't start out with an uneconomic model and burn VC cacsh so I have decent optimism that their model is sustainable.

No .AU servers, only US. Client is lightweight and unobtrusive. It will not do all the things ultra-nerds want but it will back up all your data off a windows PC very well.

Well this sucks. The main reason I was using Crashplan is they support Linux, even if the client is a big bloated Java app. I've recently been moving all my VM backups to borg so I think I'll just have to use that and then rclone the files to some cloud storage somewhere, maybe Gsuite.

I've been running a "friends and family" peer-to-peer CrashPlan server. I was thinking of trying UrBackup (https://www.urbackup.org/) as a replacement for it. No idea if it's any good though.

Like @meesham I've been using borg for server backups. It's OK but it really needs multithreading, it's very slow over a high latency link (like backing up from the US to NZ).

I use Borg on my Linux server for incremental, deduplicated backups. I sync the "database" to an S3 bucket, and I sync the S3 bucket down to my PC. It works well.

It runs on Linux, but doesn't run natively on Windows. You can probably get it working using cygwin or the W10 Linux subsystem, but that seems to be to be a bit of a hack. I'm not sure I like hacks for backups, I like reliable and supported.

I tried both Urbackup and burp and found them a bit hit and miss. I've managed to get borg working on Windows in conjunction with VSS and found it to be very reliable, although most of my machines are Linux. I was mainly using Crashplan for backing up photos and home movies (TBs of them) as well as documents and using borg to back them up to an external drive. I'm planning on setting up an SSH borg server in docker and make it available externally for a couple of VPSes and my family, locking it down with append only and fail2ban and running the purges locally.

I've done a bit of testing with borg on a cloud drive, it's pretty nice in that you can just mount the cloud drive using rclone and then mount the borg archive using FUSE and grab the files you need, no need to download the entire archive to retrieve files.
