In order to claim the MIITP postnominal I had to reach a 'Member' threshold which meant I had professional standing of several years in the IT industry. Though i've worked in IT my entire career, there's a reason I didn't join ITP until later - I didn't meet the criteria.  So no, not just any 'IT Shill' can (could) be a member.

That may have been a deterrent to 'new blood', perhaps.

I didn’t say or mean “anyone be a member“. My point was anyone can call themselves An “IT Professional” and charge for coding. Not anyone can call themselves a “Plastic Surgeon” and perform surgical procedures. IOW there’s no statutory significance or regulation around ITP that I’m aware of.

freitasm:

I think the "woke" argument is wrong anyway.

Consistent with much 'anti-woke' (which effectively translates to 'asleep') commenters across all media, that post suggests a "heyday in the days when Paul Matthews led it". That description is not entirely accurate. Those days were largely pre-Covid, which would have helped. Some of the historic debt mentioned was associated with offices which ITP NZ leased in Gilmer Terrace. They moved in there in 2010 and left very soon after Mathews resigned as CEO.
It doesn't help to speculate. Better to wait until a lot more information is available.

ITP NZ was a very strong supporter of ICT education and practise in New Zealand. Successive leaders developed relationships with relevant ministers and were available to media for discussion of current issues.
Our current Government has done very little to support ICT and I am not sure who will be representing our industry on a national basis now.

It’s a real shame that ITP has fallen. It’s the kind of organisation that quietly does an enormous amount of work on behalf of all of us, much of it “behind the scenes” and often uncredited. Back in the day, for example, ITP played a huge role in education (creating and aligning industry pathways at all levels), in working with government on dozens of issues, and in collaborating directly with industry players.

I’ve previously made the decision not to comment on the period after I finished up, and I’ll stick with that (doing so wouldn’t move anything forward). What I will say is that ITP, like other similar orgs, is an exceptionally difficult organisation to run and to gain traction for. We always had far more to do than we had resources to achieve it, and I was incredibly fortunate to work with a team (both staff and volunteers) who put in serious effort and long hours over many years to deliver what we did.

So, I do hope everyone is kind to those who’ve tried to keep things moving over the past few years, at all levels of the organisation. They’re good people who gave a lot of themselves for the benefit of the wider sector. It was bloody hard when I was there, and I suspect it’s been even harder in the years since (given the tough post-Covid times).

Just to clarify that, SteveC: the lease on ITP’s long-term offices expired about a year after I finished up and wasn’t renewed. As sometimes happens, there was a lease wind-up (“make-good”) clause that the newish building owner pushed really hard on. I understand ITP couldn’t negotiate out of it and it did end up costing a fair bit. That was paid off over time and, to my knowledge, was fully repaid prior to these recent issues - although wouldn't have helped of course.

Other than that there was no historic lease debt, or any other long-term debt, from back then that I’m aware of. But I haven't been involved for a few years now.

Ngā mihi,

Paul Matthews

Kia ora Paul.
Trust life beyond ITPNZ is still working well for you. We did have some very good times in the industry while you were CEO.
I saw a couple of emails today that should hold all the answers to the finances. Haven't looked at them yet. In the end the question is what to do now. I think our industry has changed beyond recognition since pre-covid days.
Ngā mihi nui

As an immigrant from Europe, I absolutely cannot fathom the issue some people here seem to have with languages other than English being used in any official or institutional capacity. What is the problem here? Why is it a problem? I just don't get it. Try living in Belgium or Switzerland for a time!
