Aa above. My second sentence is loaded with sarcasm. Google just killed a reader app and decided to buy a reader app. Some people may even continue to trust Google and adopt this new one. Conspiracy theorists may even think there's a chance one day Google might kill this mobile reader, like Reader. But some people will still adopt and use it, because memory is short.

This is an Apple app that turns your news feeds into a Facebook lookalike. "Making Facebook out of Google" in their words. Why would Google want that? To integrate it with G+ and become more competitive with Facebook, obviously... not to save RSS. Indeed, perhaps another nail in the RSS coffin.

"RSS is dead" has been the rally cry for years now. RSS is not going away. It's part of the plumbing of the Internet these days.

How do you think those news apps get their items to show? RSS Feed Readers aren't fancy like apps, but they give users access to as many or as little they want, and to what they want, instead of curated versions that news apps provide.

It all depends if people like bits and nuggets or the water hose.

I totally agree that RSS is great (it's how I get my news and stay up to date professionally) and I agree that the RSS technology isn't going away.

But Google can't control what you see when you use RSS readers, and nor can they see what you see. That's why they want people to get their news via G+ (whether directly or via RSS feeds).

I believe that announce it's defeat would be premature yes but its quite obvious as to how people can perceive it's downfall when the average user can find other ways of doing the same thing. RSS is something I only recommend for heavy users following 20+ sources, because for less than that social media and bookmarks will suffice. I follow nearly all my web-comics on twitter because they, as artists not geeks, all seem to have decided that twitter will be their medium of distribution. Some comics I follow have no clue what RSS is and back when I used to use RSS I just could not follow them via that means.

I do believe Google when they said that declining usage has influenced the closure of GR because I can see many middle of the road users ditching it in favor of twitter or other terms. My partner follows every game blog going ( a bit redundant if you ask me) and he refuses to use RSS instead he just has them all bookmarked and visits them as he goes. Yes RSS is not dead but its no longer the most popular kid on the playground and unfortunately the % of RSS die hards (the media/journalists/people like yourself) are not a significant proportion that outweighs the other users on the web getting their news via other means

Twitters crap for news....unless it's happening now. Overnight news it's useless (IMO) - I have a list of companies in twitter, these obviously send out releases, tweets with product updates etc. Its a pain in the proverbial to troll through your overnights looking for "news" - but some places have gone away from RSS now for this stuff - I was actually on a hunt for a twitter to rss - as it would mean I could consume their updates when I wanted - not when they posted it,.

As I'm sure you found, Twitter dropped RSS support from the latest version of their API. They turned off the previous API a couple of months ago, so there is now no Twitter to RSS.

As above. Twitter is a constant flow of data. People responding to other people, comments, etc. If you go to sleep, a RSS feed reader is a good way to catchup with the news in the morning. Twitter? Not so much. Or are you going to go through eight hours of dabble that happened while you were in bed?

Yea for breaking news but the amount of people i see just trawl through Stuff.co.nz and Herald. Some people just turn to their news aggregate for things to do, which is why Twitter is perf for them.

I think that's the common misconception in this argument, peoples internet usage habits differ, some people turn to news readers not because they crave being up to date because they are bored and want to fill themselves in withe some articles, i know several people like that. My morning ritual involves waking up and catching up on the world, other people I know don't run to their RSS or tiwtter or Stuff.co.nz until their bored like on breaks etc

Thats why these other mediums exists and are doing well AND why RSS usage is declining, peoples habits are different

So what is the current leader for moving too? feedly seems a dead duck with wanting to install an extension etc, is there any that is basically google reader hosted somewhere else?

I just found Feed Demon which is exactly what I want, but it's dead apparently as it relies on sync via Google Reader. Any others people recommend?

FeedDemon will be discontinued. However it will have ONE last update that will make it an independent feedreader. I will probably stick with FeedDemon as I have used it for years now (first with Newsgator, then with Google Reader, and soon by itself).
