You do have a point, as an IT professional it is my job to de-mystify technology as much as possible for the people I'm dealing with. But nowadays, Google's SEO is so phenomenal that (contrary to the old GIGO rule) you can now basically put garbage in and get something usable out in almost all cases, within the first three or four results.

Indeed, I cannot remember the last time I needed to click "2" for the second page of Google results!

I would say it entirely depends on what size organization you work for. 
The company I work for is not that big and Tech Services just have to know a lot about everything from desktops, software, SQL, servers, backup, networking etc. We specialize a bit, I don't do much SQL, but I do a lot of network, firewall, servers and cover desktops/laptops. My boss covers a lot of SQL and also servers and some networking.

The worst part of that is that there are currently 2 of us supporting 80 people, and we are expected to do external client support too. The client I have ended up with is in the category of people who have no business using computers. We just upgraded their desktops to windows 7 to get them onto office 365 and only then found out that they expect a software application built in 1989 to run. We got it working, but wow. Kind of amazed that MS did such a good job of backwards compatibility that it still runs. Just had to use 32 bit windows and a lot of stuffing around. Really hope that we get another staffer soon though.

I know of others though that just do one thing. I was talking a friend about IT and found he didn't touch servers. He started on front desk support and moved on to hardware support for desktops/laptops. 
Others just do backup or storage or SQL etc.

Aside from the stress and frustration, I prefer our way where we all do some of a lot of different things. Makes work a lot more interesting even if it is more fragmented and hard to focus on just one area. I know I want to end up working with network, firewalls and servers if I can. If I only did front line support I don't think I would be as happy in IT.
