freitasm: FeedDemon will be discontinued. However it will have ONE last update that will make it an independent feedreader. I will probably stick with FeedDemon as I have used it for years now (first with Newsgator, then with Google Reader, and soon by itself).

Hmm but with no Sync Server. Do you know the developer or have contact? Would he consider making it a community project so that someone could continue it's development?

GReader on Android gets feeds from Reader, but will fetch the data directly once it has the URL.

The developer (Nick Bradbury) has already posted in his blog that he's not taking this open source due to licensing issues with the libraries used in the project.

FeedDemon started as a standalone reader. He then joined Newsgator and when Newsgator stopped running their Newsgator RSS Enterprise server to focus on Intranet and Knowledge Services, he changed the software to sync with Google Reader.

I know because before Google Reader existed I ran a Newsgator server for myself for years around 2005 - 2009.

Decided to go with The Old Reader for now. Exporting from Google, uninstalling FeedDemon. Would love to keep it, but really want something that can keep in sync so I can quickly go over new stuff only.

The Old Reader is back.

Annoying thing is the lack of "Mark read and move to next unread feed" as FeedDemon provides. As it is you have two options:

- mouse: click mark read, click next feed
- keyboard: mark read, move to next feed, open next feed

Old reader doesnt seem to import folders from the google file that I had to screw around exporting.

What else is there?

Been using The Old Reader for a while now. That thing is slow. Google Reader was slow. Compared to FeedDemon those are orders of magnitude slower.

With FeedDemon you mark all read and move to next feed in a fraction of a second. On the browser? No so fast, there... Hold your horses. Let's do it slow.

I posted on Twitter that I rather have an application running on my laptop than a browser-based slow thing and some "cloud pundit" posted a comment like "Read about the IT Pro who doesn't like browser apps" without quoting myself. When confronted his answer was "Sorry, it wasn't directed at you". Yeah, right.

Reality is it may work well for twenty feeds. but not so well for two hundred feeds.

What a pain.

That's why my choice was to forego synchronisation and go with a reader on a single laptop.

Beggars belief that with a technology as popular as RSS there isn't a comsumate alternative choice. Seems like it would be an opportunity for a medium sized developer to swoop in and buy up FeedDemon or something, modernize it and get a sync server setup

I would imagine the amount of data passing into the server would be miminal, the list of feeds, high water mark and a list of read articles.
