I see Backblaze only have 30-days deleted or versioned file retention - that's useless as a backup - what if the file gets corrupted or accidentally deleted and it's 31-days since you last opened it so you don't know?

So Backblaze is out.

Hmmm... I just installed the BackBlaze trial - really nice experience with a slick app and website. It automatically discovered all of my drives and started the backup set of just under 2TB. But at the current performance, it says that it can only backup 2GB per day! Also, the 30 day retention policy sucks eggs and is just not feasible for a backup service.

The timing sucks a bit based on my subscription date. New expiry is (according to email) 02/10/18 (or via web portal 02/11/2018) which is 5.7 months. Their services end 23rd October 2018, so I am 'missing out' on 8(10) months worth of back ups as a home user.

Assuming I have read this correctly, I can migrate to small business for free, and have all of my devices backed up, until my account expires in 12.7 months?

[rant]I signed up with the /com.au domain, and pay in $AUD, so why use Americanised dates, had to check several places/times to figure out expiry[/rant]

I have 16GB RAM, not much of it is regularly used. If you're running 4GB sure that may be a problem.

If you deleted a few folders from the backup it will remove them and all version from backup storage immediately. That could help you.

I guess it's a question of what service they're trying to provide. BB seem to want to protect against hard drive failures, ransomware, and viruses hurting internal drives. CrashPlan wanted to be a full online backup system.

You could use a backup program that makes incremental backups then sync that backup folder to BackBlaze. That would address your need.

Once you migrate to Small Business your old Home account is closed and you carry on with the Small Business plan until you choose to cancel it. No expiry on the Small Business plan.

Except this does say it is free until the end of your current 'For home' subscription. I realise you can carry on paying after that point, 75% off for 12months. Just trying to work out options personally I will likely go to Backblaze as it is cheaper for me.

Yeah, that's an option if required. But I'm hoping support will come back and say that I'm fine to go ahead and migrate as is.

I'd imagine they will be having a lot of support queries coming in so not sure when I can expect an answer.

I believe that means that if you migrate when you still have 5 months left on your Home subscription, you then get the first 5 months of Small Business "free" (it's not really free as you have already paid for it in your Home subscription). Then 75% off for the the following 12 months after that. Then full price.

EDIT: In your case you are already paid up until February 2018, and then if migrating to Small Business you will only pay US$2.50 per month (75% discount) until February 2019. Price won't increase for you to US$10 per month until Feb 2019. So you would be best to stay on CrashPlan until Feb 2019 and then look at changing.

So apart from that syncing software, has anyone got something that can be used for client backups? Or should I be doing scheduled copies from client machines to a server?

I tend to do one a day of those....perhaps they need to be more frequent given crashplan free wont be looking for changes.

I've opted to go with the Small Business offering for the time being. Full price won't kick in until April 2018 so there's plenty of time to see how the current alternatives progress. Migration was easy. Software upgraded itself as part of the process.

There are dozens of backup programs around. I use CloudBerry Backup, but it's limited to 1TB of data per machine.

I am looking at CloudBerry Windows Server licences now along with Amazon Glacier 1TB storage. What has your experience been like? Are you doing full system backups or just certain files or both?

I am looking at doing both - a monthly full system (image) backup (160GB Windows drive), and instant (if changes occur) document backups (100GB drive) with versioning.

In your experience, would you recommend CloudBerry?

Installed Backblaze but I see it creates a copy of all files by default - including some folders that are really temporary like AppData. And they won't show in the exclusion file picker...

That's what I'll be doing as well as soon as i have been advised that my very borderline 4.9TB will migrate ok.

@Stu since they have extended all Home subscriptions by 60 days for free, then 12 months discount after that. The earliest full price will kick in should be October 2018, and possibly later depending on when your original subscription was due to expire. Or am I misunderstanding how it works?

Correct @Paul1977. My subscription was set to renew in Feb 2018, so Apr 2018 with their 60 day extension. Then, with 12 months at the discounted rate of $US2.50 a month that means I pay full price from Apr 2019.
