Lewiscr:

Applied the following fix this morning and the issue is resolved

cd c:\Program Files\Common Files\microsoft shared\ClickToRun

OfficeC2rclient.exe /update user updatetoversion=16.0.13901.20462

This initaites a download of the older version from the web and it installed and the problem is resolved.  I assume MS will come up with an update to the buggy version in due course.

They did. 6 hrs ago.

Oblivian: Perhaps OP post needs an update for our overseas friends google hits, to point out it's fixed, and manual fixes/avoids no longer required

Geekzone member list must have nearly doubled this morning!

You ain't kiddin! I had to go half way around the world for a solution. Funny thing, it was the end of our day (in the Eastern US) and the start of yours... So we both saw the issue at critical parts of our days.

"Jiriteach:- We're performing an extensive review of our coding to understand how the issue occurred and why it was missed during the testing and early deployment cycle. "

Perhaps dont fire your testing staff. Could that be it ?

OK, so question is, how long until the next major one.
I'll give it 2-3 months . :-(

This seems to the way MS works now, rollout OBVIOUSLY untested updates .
Then after the worldwide chaos, pull the update & rollout a fix.

MS seems to get a free pass for this ongoing sloppyness.
The only positive is they resolved it quickly .

Hi  the only way to teach MS is to talk with your wallet.

I bought 'Em Client' email program. https://www.emclient.com/

during install it picked up that outlook existed. Tick yes to transfer everything across to Em Client and boom, we are up and running again.

Em client does way more that what outlook does!

i deleted MS outlook crapware.

I am so relieved to never have to deal with MS again

365 and the apps used with it are an industry standard. A lot of us aren't single install users, but dealing with small right up to massive enterprise coverage and need to support it

In that regard, Just changing away, isn't as easy as a home user snubbing them.

Greetings from the U.S.

Firstly, many thanks to the person who initially posted the workaround command to do the rollback! I work for an MSP and this began affecting many end users across all our clients. As suspected, several man hours were spent troubleshooting and scratching heads, but the workaround fixed it.

I signed up to give thanks, and also chime in with some updates you guys may want to be aware of:

1. Regarding the quoted post, I just had a user with a similar issue which was resolved by manually running the rollback. I initially updated Office and restarted Outlook but it didn't fix it, so I'm not so sure MS's rollout fix is fully deployed.

2. There seems to be another symptom our technicians stumbled upon days ago. Could be an entirely different problem but this too is related to visual display of Outlook elements, and the rollback workaround fixed this issue...

Symptom: Auto-fill contact list is non-scrollable and only appears in a vertical frame, going up/above the address field. The frame cuts off depending on location of the drafted email window (I.E. the closer to the top of screen the less names you see).

Just be aware if users come across this problem as well; it's another annoying bug that stumped us

For those interested, Microsoft has now published an initial post-incident report.
Here are the relevant details -

Scope of Impact
This issue could have affected any user attempting to view an email message in the Outlook client or a document in Word. The affected Office client builds were:
16.0.13929.20372
16.0.13929.20296
16.0.13929.20254
16.0.13929.20216

Incident Start Date and Time
Tuesday, May 11, 2021, at 6:24 PM UTC
Incident End Date and Time
Wednesday, May 12, 2021, at 2:00 AM UTC

Root Cause
While mitigating another problem in Microsoft Word, a configuration rollout was deployed for specific 16.0.13929.xxxxx build versions. However, this had an unexpected side-effect on the Outlook client and Web Layout View used by Microsoft Word.

Action
We're performing an extensive review of our coding to understand how the issue occurred and why it was missed during the testing and early deployment cycle.

We know Outlook uses the old, outdated, non-standards Word web view. How could they not know it?

only got affected by the bug today as outlook would not open. did a rollback as suggested and did not work. Maybe because I had not blocked updates.

Went to word and disabled updates, then did a system restore(a week earlier) and all ok for now. The symptoms described above( Auto-fill contact list is non-scrollable and only appears in a vertical frame, going up/above the address field) also disappeared.

Just in case someone else has the bug.

Thanks for all suggestions

Well, it didn't arrive here so I had to work around and will be waiting for a future update before I change to auto updates.
