Want to ask a few simple questions on something I know absolutely nothing about

1) If I want to register a .com or .co.nz name how do I go about it. What companies would you recommend what ones should I stay away from. I do not want to create a site, just register the name.

2) is registering different from parking?

Some sites you enter return nothing, others come up with random advertising or go-daddy. I guess the ones with random advertising or go-daddy are registered but just not used and the ones that return nothing or could not be found do not exist yet.

Any other advice usefull

I've used Hosting Direct for my couple of .nz domains, they have been good, no problems.
Parking is, I think, just registering it but not pointing it at anything useful(?).
Is quite easy to buy a domain and point it to a free thing like a blogger blog or similar.

Cheers,
Joseph

Email a few and see how good and quick their support is. Often the cheap ones will display a parking page with advertising, it is one way they make money. Some will offer you free redirection and email redirects for free.

Cyber squatting then... If you are planning to register a domain name using words that are trademarked you might find out that a good lawyer on the trademark's owner side could quickly make your money worth nothing...

Stay away from doing it at all.  Domain squatters are a plague on the internet, and I think you'll find very little support for your despicable plan in any legitimate forum.

Some could register the domain in their own name instead of yours, or you may have difficulty getting the code from them if you want to move it etc. A domain is a domain, it will be the same whoever you buy it from. The difference is the support you receive including the way they register it, and any other addon features you get with it.
