Hi Team,

Client has web site and DNS hosted wiith Zeald, but something seems to have gone wonky between 2:45 and 3:45 (from our perspective).

We cannot resolve DNS entries for the client.  We can't send them email or access their web site from our Vodafone connection.  Offshore based monitoring systems cannot resolve the DNS entries.  Teecom broadband connections can resolve the DNS entries (I suspect only because they are cached and the cache has yet to expire).

I've logged a case with Zeald, and it sounds like there have been similar calls from other customers.

Is anyone seeing similar issues?

Note this is not the beginning of a Zeald beat up, and my description of the issue could be completely wrong.

Cheers
Mike

The issue was resolved between 5:45pm and 6:45pm.  Thank you Zeald.  :)

Probably their facebook page is the best place to go from the looks of it.

It broke again (from our perspective) between 9:45 and 10:45 this morning :(

A call to their phone number advised they were working on it with the highest priority.

Nothing on their FB page (I checked!)

I find DNS from Zeald pretty unreliable, this will be the 6th or 7th outage I know our clients have experienced in the last 12 months.

Why not just use your own DNS and point components like the website to their IP, and host things like email elsewhere.

I am pretty sure they insist you must use their DNS?

Yep Zeald have the whole shooting match at present.  That may have to change.

Many clients are finding business tight enough without potential lost business through supplier reliability issues.  This favourite client of ours sells 3 or 4 widgets a year with high-6-figure price tags in what right now is an unusually quiet (and getting cutthroat market).  One potential client trying to visit their web site right now could influence them just enough to sign a contract with someone else (anywhere in the world) and that's 1/4 of my client's annual turnover gone and a decent number of Kiwi contractors and suppliers without work.

DNS is usually one of the easiest systems to run so seems odd that their primary and backup nameservers failed at the same time? Wonder if they are both on a single multihomed box :p

To be honest though it's best your web host provides your DNS hosting or if not, you point to a canocial name they hold for you as should they ever change IPs, deploy IPv6 or whatever that could cause further issues.

Annnd it looks like they have only a single DNS server which is currently offline:

http://www.intodns.com/zeald.com

60.234.65.226

Unless its behind some proxy/load balancer but even then single point of failure. Their secondary name server should be on a separate (non Orcon) network and a 3rd on yet another network. It's hard to say how their system works as it looks like orcon's core router 2 does something a little out of the ordinary for them....

Why don't they host it on their own dedicated server then. It may cost more, but then they will be in control of any problems.

Generally in theory a decent business focussed ISP's DNS should be near rock solid - more so than the ADSL connections most of our clients use.  We aim to have a backup email facility (so new messages can be accessed if a server is down).  Having a DNS outage like this (while it is not yet a lengthy duration) in our experience is unprecedented.
