It appears there is a new scam on the loose.

On our store phone we recieved a call from a number "623547" who had an indian accent and was quoting they were calling from Napier asking if they could revamp our website for us.

The person on the phone was wanting my email address to send one email with a quote. I declined to give this to him and he went off saying "Your website is easilly hacked and if you don't get this sorted quickly you can be the victim of indentity theft"

For the people who know me, you know I work for quote a large corp so that's when warning bells went off. Since I hung up on the caller he has tried calling us again, and again.

Possibility of the nature of the call:

* Pass on details of server login details so they can inject their own code into your site.

* Deface your website and ask for ransom to get it running again.

I was almost tempted to set up a honeypot to see what they would do, and possibly will when I next recieve a call.

Anyone else recieved calls of this nature?

I can see we've received 5 calls from that same number at work today (of course nobody is there on a Saturday anyway).

I recall a similar number calling pretty persistently for a week or so a couple of months ago - I never bothered answering any of the calls at the time as I knew it was a faked caller id.

My parents have had several cold calls from so called web designers wanting their email address to send a quote, but they said they sounded like NZers. They have had emails from them too and they did have NZ addresses. Very poor web design skills though.

I will set up a new Linode so I am prepared for if they call again, kinda interested with what they will do.

The problem is this is totally a spoofed caller ID - if they ring again I will give them an email address and see what they happen to send me.
