Hi All,

Just looking for a few oppinions on who you think provides the best domain hosting services here in NZ. I'm looking at registering a domain providing email/website and sms functionality.
With the massive range of pricing per year, I figure it's better doing the research now rather than diving straight in for the first site I see and getting ripped off.

There are so many registrars out there, it's hard to chose.

Any ideas from the floor would be fantastic.

Cheers,

Andrew.

sysengrnz: Hi All,

You mean you are looking for a web host, which will host email and websites. Not sure about sms, you probably need to go to a specialist provider for just that.
There are many around, but you need to look at things like backups, support, network (eg do they use just a single server, or a cluster of servers to host services), and reliability. You will probably want one that does more that just does daily backups, which you will probably find is what most of the cheaper providers offer. Contact a few after hours asking them about their network, and see how good their support is by their reply times. Also you will want one that has been around for many years, so you can be sure they aren't going to just close down overnight.

For webhosting, I use Sitehost (Auckland based) which has an excellent uptime and has a fast connection (never had issues) they mainly do dedicated/virtual servers but also shared hosting ( http://www.sitehost.co.nz/hosting/shared-hosting ).

For the domains, I use Discount Domains ( https://www.discountdomains.co.nz/ ) which I believe is NZ based (mainly due to the fact it's using an NZ domain and seems to be however have actually done no research on it), haven't had issues with them either.

Yeah, you'll find plenty of other topics about this, but http://www.domains4less.co.nz all the way for me :)
They use Webdrive's Controlpanel backend for DNS management etc, if you've ever used that.

Domain registration, DNS hosting, web hosting, database hosting, email hosting are separate things which are often bundled together but don't have to be.

You can get everything from one provider or you can use different providers.

For a basic promotional website, domain and email for a friend I've used something like this http://www.openhost.co.nz/web-hosting/

Alternatively you can register the domain with cheaper providers (metaname, domains4less, discountdomains), use google apps standard/free for email hosting and choose someone else for website hosting.

https://www.discountdomains.co.nz/

What are your requirements for your website just html or server side framework/code eg: php, ruby, asp.net? Do you need a database eg: MySQL or SQL Server etc?

What's it for eg: blog/personal, online store etc?

I've got a couple registered with domains4less and never had any problems.

Lias:

Domain names are one thing, hosting is another. Domain are basically commodity items, so it shouldn't really matter who you use to register them, the only difference maybe the control panel to manage it with, and possibily some free things like DNS/email forwarding etc.
Hosting however differs a lot, and is far more difficult to compare, as there are different quality of both the hardware and support. But as a rule, the less you pay, the more accounts they will likely have on their servers, and the more customers they potentially have to support.

The OP asked about domain hosting, not website hosting. I recommended a domain host.
