Yes, someone posted earlier today in a discussion about email providers a link direct to the horse's mouth.

Basically if you don't have an account yet and want a free service, look at Windows Live Domains. If you want to get an account then you should consider Office 365 as well.

It should be noted that those already with apps accounts aren't affected, only new signups.  So it's not quite the bombshell that the article implies.

Either way, IMO Google Apps is easily worth the money.

If you want free, use Windows Live Domains. Outlook email, calendar, contacts, SkyDrive and more.

If you are willing to pay, an Office 365 account is worth looking at.

Exchange sync is so much easier for Outlook use, and Outlook.com access is pretty good.

Hopefully Google will provide a service  that allows use of just their email services with a custom domain, for free or perhaps a token sum.
