Hi,
I am looking for colo space in a reputable Datacentre in Wellington.
I can't seem to find a decent list on the web. Anyone have any sugggestion/experience?

Any reason why do you want it in Wellington? Easy access to hardware?

It's to host DR Server equipment for an Auckland based business. They think Hamilton and outer Auckland as too close geographically. Open to other suggestions outside Auckland too... :)

You could start by looking at Citylink, who are based opposite the Dom Post on Boulcott Street. AT&T I think have a present in the city but depends on if their have rack space for hire.

At Nethui last year, there was a hosting discussion around Trademe hosting external clients on their infrastructure and using the capacity and niche that they have for delivering content onshore. Might be work asking them too?

There used to be one in the avalon tv tower, which I believe is now operated by Orcon. Although not sure if it is still there. But there does seem to be limited options in Wellington compared to Auckland.

I'm pretty sure HDS/Rivera and Datacom also colo.

Just depends on how much gear you want to put in there as I know Telecom and EDS/HP do too.. but that would be for a lot of racks.

Unisys have a decent sized data center out here in Paraparaumu.

I know Orcon don't provide colo from Avalon. The ones I think of are Xtreme Networks who i think are somewhere near parliament. I also know Unleash can provide colo space somewhere in that vicinity (its AT&T or at least AT&T are in there from memory).

Your best bet is actually Christchurch for DR stuff - heaps of options down there.

Probably more options in Christchurch yeah

The Datacom Wellington DC isn't a purpose built one so I wouldn't recommend colocating in there, nothing wrong with it but it's certainly not state of the art

I have been able to lookup Xtreme - they seem decent enough, anyone have any direct experience?

I believe DTS have a new Data Centre recently opened in Upper Hutt.

Things are only as complicated as you want them to be!!

Funny that your clients would feel more comfortable with Wellington over Christchurch.

Of all the popular colo options in Christchurch, I don't know of any that are no longer operating due to the earthquakes.

Yep I agree totally with you. They are Banking and Risk types though, so are a little more pedantic than most..!

I've worked with Mike with a client I had before I worked at Telecom and I found him excellent.

Worth calling them up and seeing what options they have.

Valid reasons though, and I think it has more to do with power supply more than anything. Also perception is a major thing. In Wellington, you would expect the buildings to be designed to withstand earthquakes better, as it has always been a high risk zone.
