In an article about the RSA 2013 conference (http://bit.ly/164CJjo), it mentioned the Secunia Small Business service (http://bit.ly/WtcilV). So I checked it out.

Despite being in beta, looks like a really good product, especially as free during beta and following that, free for up to 5 hosts.

I like the concept of being able to manage the security for family computers (includes non-IT spouses) who just ignore update requests etc.

I'll be installing my and wife's computers tonight and will post the experience.

Also, if you are looking for something and willing to pay, Microsoft InTune costs around $8/month per device. It says it controls/manages Windows, iOS, Android.

I haven't used though.

Had heard of InTune but never looked at it.

Seems more business-class what with it incorporating an MDM. Secunia Small Business looks like a better fit for keeping it more simple and for home users.

Still some problems. For example it correctly identified Adobe Air needed an update. It also said my Winzip 11 needed an update - but that's not free, it's actually a newer paid version, which I don't need/want.

It said there was a critical MSXML 4.0 update. Installed it and then Windows Update told me there was service pack for MSXML 4.0 available. This is exactly what I had before.

Then after a second refresh it came with this:

Clicking every single one of these (more MSXML versions) actually opened Windows Update, which showed me there was no updates available.

A third refresh on Secunia tells me there are no programs in need of update now - all those MSXML are gone...

If you are not an IT person this can get confusing very quickly...

Well that sucks. Pretty poor, even for a beta product. The way they "sell it" gives the impression that an admin can manage all those updates/prompts. Ideally users would not even see such pesky, much less inaccurate messages.

Will create even more of a headache then when in-laws (out-laws??) call asking about these.

Now, about that InTune product....

FWIW we had to implement Secunia CSI for one of our clients, despite claiming to be "Enterprise" grade it is anything but.

In a multi domain/DMZ environment you have to poke more holes in your firewall, allow Secunia to access an external Secunia site which needs external DNS lookups meaning you're likely exposing yourself to more risk using it than what its intended use is for.

I will never touch Secunia again.

I am very interested in the Secunia Small Business version - although I have a few doubts:

1. Does anyone know what the pricing is for 5 to 50 PCs?

2. Does anyone else have an opinion like JamesL, or the opposite, about Secunia enterprise?

Personally I have always found the PSI software to be a combination of very useful, and extremely frustrating: I am particularly interested in hearing from anyone with experience with the enterprise version!

The Microsoft solution sounds interesting, although it would be expensive if we have to pay per OS, per device, and per VM ($3000+ per year for 8 users - not a just try it decision).
