So... I have a handful of .co.nz domains registered through crazydomains.co.nz

In hindsight, I perhaps wouldn't have gone with them, but that's done, and my next step may be to suck it up and transfer registrar, however I was hoping there would be some wise folk here who could just tell me I'm doing it all wrong.

As mentioned, a handful of .co.nz domains registered through crazydomains.co.nz and I have a hosting service with GoDaddy.com

I want my handful of domains to point to my hosting service.

I thought that all I needed to do was create the domain in my hosting service, take the DNS servers of that hosted domain and apply them into the registered domain. Thereby replacing crazydomains dns with GoDaddy domains that are designated to that hosted domain.

Did that, doesn't work. Contacted crazydomains and they said I need to change the A record of the domain registered with them, and the ONLY way to do that is to upgrade to their add-on DNS service, which is another $24 per domain.

So lesson learned all that, it turns out crazydomains don't provide DNS service with their domain registrations as all other registrars do. I ddn't think to check as I've never known it not provided as a core service before.

Irrespective of that, and whilst it is a tad annoying, I was also under the impression that if you amended a registered domains DNS to that of those identified for the hosted domain by the hosting service, then that would take care of the redirection, but it isn't working.

Before I get in touch with crazydomains to ask why it's not working, I needed to know whether I'm right or wrong. The alternative is I'm going to transfer my registration. Not happy with crazydomans, and I am not happy with myself, but I've never heard of a the DNS service being an optional add-on with price up-lift.

Any help appreciated.

Are you able to change the nameservers associated with each domain?

If you can, then you can use a service like cloudflare.com, freedns.afraid.org etc to host the DNS giving you the ability to add/remove records

You need to set the NS record for the domain to point to the GoDaddy DNS and then manage the DNS on GoDaddy (more technical) or Cloudflare (a lot easier).

Your registrar has to give you a way to set the nameservers or do that themselves.

As freitasm has said you will just need to change the location of the name servers to the go daddy ones. The extra service they are offering is DNS hosting, however I suspect you get that free with go dayddy.

Help file here

I am 99% sure that they offer the ability to change name servers to your own, and am sure if they didnt they would be in breach of rules related to their registrar contract.  It more about finding the right spot.  Normally these control panels have the ability to save 3rd party name servers and so you enter and save, but they dont propigate because there is also a checkbox that says something along the lines of "Use our domain name servers".  So check that you have the 3rd party name server option ticked.

It was indeed a propagation timing issue, combined with my own impatience. Again, I've been my experience on other companies, whereby DNS service are free and propagation is minutes not hours.

I've noticed that a few of the domains are now starting to forward to the appropriate hosting service.

All that I have to contend with now is that the crazydomains.co.nz service seems to be regularly unavailable for a couple of hours every other day. Their reliability is causing me concern now as it actually affects their dns management too.

Thanks to all that helped and showed me that I am not as dim as I thought I was...

In my experience, propagation can be fairly hit-and-miss so I tend to allow at least 48-72 hours - especially if you are changing DNS Authoritative servers for a domain.

If you know in advance you're going to change, you can usually shorten TTL right down but even that doesn't guarantee that someone won't cache it longer than the specified TTL - that and they'll only pick up the new TTL once the old one expired already!

I used to use crazy domains but I also found them totally unreliable all for a couple dollars cheaper,

I found their support totally useless.

I now use www.softhost.co.nz for my domain registrations and webhosting. Domains are $19.95 for .nz domains.
