Does anyone have an idea of how long this upgrade should take. Looks like there is a Joomla process using jUpgrade and MooTools.

How long for a beginner and how long for a pro that designed the site?

How long is a piece of string. It potentially may require a total template redesign, if the old one doesn't work with the new version.

Thanks - I know the question was fairly open ended...is it likely or common that 1.5 templates won't work with later versions?

Does the new one-click upgrade process in Joomla 2.5 also upgrade/update templates to work with new versions?

Is there any part of the template that is more version specific than others? or is it a matter of deprecated commands/functions no longer working?

From past experience your existing template may work but will likely have very limited functionality. Everytime I've upgraded Joomla versions I've used it as an excuse to give the site a complete refresh.

Time taken varies significantly based on site size and components used. Also some components haven't been upgraded to be compatable with 2.5/3 so may pay to do an audit.

I'd definitely advise take a copy of the site using Akeeba Backup and create a test site using Akeeba Kickstart for yourself either on a local server or as a subdomain.

It's a relatively big jump. The template changes aren't that huge unless you have huge numbers of configurable options but the content and especially addons will be the hardest part.
