Hi All,

Wondering if someone can give me an idea of what an average salary would be for a Junior help desk agent. The main tasks would include the below.

* Install Software
* Resolve printing issues
* Resolve wireless connection issues
* Provide instruction on backups & servicing
* Log service jobs with local repair agent
* Keep notes of work completed

This would be a very basic IT role which would allow the senior techs to get on with projects and difficult tasks.

Your input is appreciated and please feel free to ask any questions.

Yeah, for an entry level type role somewhere between $35k and $40k is probably about right.

Moved to correct forum. Even Junior Help desk people have to post in right forums...

35-40k is normal for this.

Its probably not the industry standard but from what I noticed last time I was looking the lower end tend to be the more technical IT company roles with room to move and the higher end tend to be ISP barely technical roles.

Where in NZ? 35-40k sounds about right, I started my IT career for less than that 5 years ago.

They still have a whole lot to learn if they haven't actually worked in the field.

Agreed - and even a degree in comp sci is no guarantee that someone can apply their skills practically...

To the OP, what sort of quals are you expecting that a potential appointment would have,

Polytech level National certificate, ?

Any work experience?

This website indicated Help desk based "computer technician" roles are between 35 and 45K

I completely agree.

I myself know a number of Compsci Majors who have little in the way of practical knowledge, I was meaning in a matter of interest sense rather than than anything else with my original comment.

It somewhat depends on the help desk. The variation in help desks is.. wide. in some places its a glorified call centre CSR job, and in others it can cover field engineer and server admin duties, and every shade of grey in between.

I'd say the range is 35-50k depending on how far it falls within that range.
