Hi There!

Anyone else having customers reporting mail bouncing in and out with domains failing to resolve name servers, mx or a records? Seems intermittent but relatively widespread. One .co.nz domain could be resolved ok by google, but not by mxtoolbox, doesn't seem to be any pattern?

Doesn't seem to matter, and the problem appears to be both incoming and outgoing for various customers so I presume they will use different ones, I am guessing perhaps an international link/dns issue maybe.

Is it only affecting mail? We're routing all our mail via Amazon SES, which seems to be working fine.

Probably not related, but I made a note in the Snap forum because I've had a weird intermittent domain issue not resolving a Trade Me cname which points to awsamazon.com address for advertisements. I've been trying to figure out if it was Snap DNS, my DNS (which I replaced with another DNS server), or something weird going on above and beyond somewhere. I couldn't figure out if it's NZ or overseas that's intermittently resolving. But it hasn't seem to effect anything else but the mentioned above.

I think this is to broad.

You mean you have a customer's domain that is resolved in some DNS but not others? What registrar? Are you using a third party DNS provider to host those records?

The Google DNS problem seems to be happening in the last few hours, I see the post is from earlier than that but it could be related.

Tried using http://www.whatsmydns.net/ to test DNS lookups from different places?

you can use nslookup command to test any dns server e.g. try this:

"nslookup geekzone.co.nz 8.8.8.8" will use the Google DNS rather than your default

Who is your DNS provider as the problem will likely be with them. One of the problems I have found with using a cheap or free one that comes with the domain registrar is they can be not as reliable. People think they are saving money by going for the cheapest service, but unreliability likely costs a business a lot more than the relatively small savings that they make.

As above. If your customers expect a resilient and reliable business service, consider paid DNS providers such as dyn.com or at least Cloudflare (free, and CDN/security options can be turned off).
