So at the moment, I am piggybacking off my friends Linode that he has - but I idealy want to move to something of my own, so I can also manage other hosts.

My domain is through GoDaddy, but their interface leaves a lot to be desired. Are there any other free, decent solutions? I'm not looking at paying for one, as I don't value it that much, but if there was an alternative, I'd like to try it.

Any ideas?

Just basic stuff? Use Cloudflare for DNS then.

Just use Bind9 and manage the DNS yourself in Linux...

Of course it could be done, but you have to consider some users don't want to run their own servers - which I think is the case here.

Just remember that free often doesn't last forever, and things that may start out free may end up having to be paid for eventually if they change their terms, which can be a hassle. (speaking from experience)

If you're using a Linode they do have a pretty good DNS management control panel built straight into Linode Manager.

If you're going to get a Linode it'll be awesome if you can sign up using [This Link] - it does help me out a wee bit :) If you're wanting screenshots of the domain interface just let me know else another way of doing it is to transfer your doman(s) into Metaname who have an awesome management interface.

Thanks for the replies all.

You're right MF, I don't particularly want the cost of having to host my own servers to host DNS. If I could justify the cost, then I would, but given my work with my domain is so minuscule, I feel that it would just be wasted really.

I've been using Cloudflare since MF suggested it and to honest it's doing the job fine. I understand when you say that free isn't always best, Matt, but at the end of the day, it is free at the moment, so its fit-for-purpose.

btw, sorry michaelmurfy, moving away from Linode, bud :) Otherwise, I'll keep that in mind if I move back!
