PMI Vs. PRINCE2

Greetings all,

I work in project management here in NZ and I'm considering upskilling to either the PRINCE2 Foundation / Practitioner or the PMI CAPM / PMP. I have 2 questions on the use of the the 2 primary Project Management methodologies here in NZ.

Firstly - is there a preference for either the PRINCE2 or PMI methods here in NZ? I am aware that a number of Government dept here use PRINCE2, but I was not clear on whether or not there was a preference.
Secondly, can anybody provide me examples of companies in NZ where PRINCE2 or PMI is actively used as a baseline for project management?

I've seen both used in equally to be honest, but that's just me - I'm sure there's probably a bias one way or the other. I did a Prince2 Foundation a few years back and it was pretty straight forward, common sense stuff. Not sure about PMI. I will say most of my NZ based PM colleagues seem to be Prince2 certified, with the majority of my non-NZ colleagues PMI certified.

Okay I reached out to my contacts and did some asking around – PRINCE2 appears to be the preference for NZ, primarily because of a preference at government levl. Several other governments are now recommending its use (for example the Netherlands (2nd biggest user of PRINCE2),Australia for the MOD (3rd largest adopter), UAE, Denmark,Germany (In the finance arena), Hong Kong (in the Post office) and South Africa. Apparently it has been adopted by the United Nations Development Program as part of their global framework for managing projects.

Interestingly:

“Five of the 13 organisations that piloted the 2009 version of PRINCE2 were from New Zealand and are credited in the PRINCE2 manual.
