Prediction: Big companies that always purchased extended warranty will continue to do so.  Small companies which didn't will either stop buying HP or just get the patches from TPB.

Yah I see this as a bad thing for HP, I can't see the extra revenue equalling the quantity of customers who will perceive this badly and move to other brands.

If you have an issue with this, raise it with your reseller or distributor, they have channels for passing this feedback. I have spoken to HP over the last few days, they are prepared to listen.

I would pay for serious updates to my consumer devices if it mean they kept getting updated and better optimized.  My laptop stopped getting custom driver/firmware updates from Dell after 6 months, and most Androids never get more than one version update.

There are many ways to remedy this, but it does seem that HP continues to make poor decisions, they are not the company they were prior the Compaq merger.

More hurts the SMB/after market support people.

Small businesses with aging hardware that don't buy support contracts - now those 3rd party support people will have a harder time updating their kit.

I assume the idea is to make everyone keep their support up to date.

More likely to mildly annoy some people.

Regarding Laptops - the Probook 4540/4570 cannot resume from sleep with Windows 8.1. Has been an issue since October - HP have said they haven't tested it so good luck.

That's is a laptop that is 18 months old.

Same here, if some of the clients will buy multiple identical HP servers in the future, they will probably get an extended care pack only for one and use its firmware on the others.
Smaller ones will go for Dell or Lenovo servers, maybe Acer.
