Found this brilliant site yesterday which has a list of low end VPSs you can purchase on an annual basis including ones for $4US per year or 3Euro.

Wow. I thought my $5 per month DigitalOcean VPS was a good deal. These are crazy cheap.

I've tried a few of those really cheap deals and there is a term in virtualisation called 'over commitment'. While it is a good deal and the virtualisation layer will report that you have the said resources at your disposal, the reality is that a business model based on that kind of expectation is going to come up short if everybody simultaneously runs a VPN or starts a proxy service.

To put it another way, imagine if all the clients at your local gym actually used the gym three times a week.

Having said all that, Digital Ocean were the better of the cheap plans - mostly because they actively kick off or limit the crypto miners and heavy CPU users and I have come across VPS users who actively prevent VPNs being setup. I recommend anybody helping themselves to the list, make sure they get a trial period and test everything in that period before giving in to a subscription.

I pay $1 a month for a VPS as a backup DNS server for 2 others. Is it oversold? Yes. Have I ever used a large quanitity of the resources? No. Will I need to? Highly unlikely. For me I knew what I was buying into with a cheap VPS, it serves its purpose perfectly for what I need it for (no downtime for 326 days until today - shifted to a new node which required a new IP).

Nothing wrong with cheap VPS's as long as you have reasonable expectations. /2c
