Im looking to start a very simple eCommerce site in the next couple of days, and I would really appreciate some input about available solutions.
I am pretty much decided on using shopify starter package as not much else seems to come close to the simplicity and price.

My main concern is payment gateways I have no experience with these, I basically just want cheap and simple credit card processing but without the need for a merchant account.

Does anyone have any experience?

Look at the supported payment gateways and pick. The most popular and one of the most supported would be Paypal.

Now they have several options depending on the type of experience you want for your customers. You will need to decide of the methods paypal offers which best suits your needs.

There doesn't seem to be any payment gateways that shopify supports that don't require a merchant account?
The only option seems to be paypal who have the most ludicrous terms I've ever heard!

For low value items there soon gets to be a lot of people taking a slice of the payment pie.

I use Bigcommerce on a number of client websites, and have been using the software for many years. Originally it was a shopping cart hat you installed on your own server, which cost a few thousand to buy, and also a yearly payment for maintenance updates. However now they have made it a hosted solution for a monthly fee. It allows you a lot of custom design freedom with CSS and you can edit the html files, and has a lot of modern features. I see they have also released some nice modern responsive themes recently. It also has quite a few payment options, including Paymate which is sort of a NZ/ Oz version of Paypal, not that I use it. Also eway and paymentexpress, but you may need a merchant account for those. But you can signup to a free trial at http://tinyurl.com/bigcommercelink , to give it a good road test and see how easy it is to use. You can start off simple and it can grow, whereas with some others I have seen, going froma simple system means moving to a another system when it grows. I know of some companies that have been through about 5 different shopping systems with different companies, as their business has grown. I haven't tried shopify, so not sure how the features compare.

What service were you wanting to use with Shopify? Have you checked to see if their payment gateways has a system created. Alternatively use the shopify API to create your own. Of course fees by paypal will be dearer than just providing a payment system, they have to provide the merchant equivalent service which costs money!

Something like DPS? DPS are quite possibly your best bet for CC payments online in NZ. They partner with shopify - it should almost be a plugin/configuration item?

If you want to accept bitcoin, bitpay also integrate with Shopify.

You still need a merchant account, and then the monthly fee for payment express. This may not be worth it if they are still a small store. You have to be making a reasonable amount before it is worth moving from paypal to such a system. Pretty much all the main shopping carts will support payment express. It is the smaller systems which not all shopping carts will support.

Just checked small fish's website - it supports Flo2Cash and Swipe HQ - both don't require a merchant account for processing.

We're in the process of looking into KiwiPay (http://getkiwipay.com) for one of our clients. Looks pretty good so far. No merchant account required, they take the payment and drop it into your account.
