Hi,

Does anyone have a WAN link between Dunedin and Auckland that could tell me about what latency they get on that link.

Obviously there are many many factors with this kind of thing, but it would be handy to see what other people are getting and what kind of link you have in place.

We have a 50/50 Carrier Ethernet fibre solution and get around the 35-37ms mark.

Thanks,
Alex.

35 sounds a little high... as above, what does a tracert show?

Using a VPN over the public network (Orcon at both ends) I'm getting 22ms

100/50 Dunedin, 20M fibre Auckland

Excuse the weird image, it was the easiest way to get it out of a VM.

Just to clarify, the 36ms is an icmp round trip there and back, so one way it would be 18ms.
So it would be helpful to know if other results are one way, or round trip.

How are the two sites linked: VPN tunnel operating on the router at each end or is the ISP providing that functionality?

Isp is providing everything we have an isp supplied Alcatel Lucent router to plug into. Everything between the routers is controlled by the ISP

8ms for me from Wellington to Auckland - that is a Citylink connection with a Meraki VPN to Auckland (on Chorus Fibre) via the ISP Vibe, no special routing - just a site-to-site VPN (outside of this it is just internet).

12ms to our Auckland office from my laptop on Spark UFB connected by WiFi. Sure this is not the best example but 30ms from Dunedin to Auckland sounds about right.

Probably a standard oldschool OneOffice connection.

michaelmurfy, is your 8ms from Wellington to Auckland one direction, or a round trip?

When people say the ISP provides the VPN - how do you encrypt your traffic before it hits their network?
